Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I'm perplexed...Christmas Trees and toddlers?!?

how the heck am i going to babyproof a christmas tree? breakable ornaments, lights, plugs, choking hazards..oy vey!

I suggested putting one of those baby cages around the tree...oh what festive sight that will be! But other than putting it in a room that LO won't enter (but what's the point in having a tree then?)...what else can you do?

  • We are going to put the tree up first (its prelite) and then see how DS does with it.  If he keeps on going to it and grabbing things, we will resort to the baby gate around it.  He is pretty good about listening, so hopefully it will be okay! GL!

  • I know some people that put baby gates around the tree. DS was 13 months last Christmas and had just started walking when we had the tree up and he was curious at first and of course, we let him see the ornaments and the lights but after the first couple days, he was over it. He never bothered it. I was worried he'd be pulling stuff off and getting into the presents but he didn't bother anything and we had it up in our main living area too. The only thing I'm worried about this year is him getting into the presents. Smile
  • We bought a smaller tree to put on top of our TV stand the year DD was turning 1.  The next year (when she turned 2) she did ok with a big tree, we did tie it to the wall to avoid tipping over and only put unbreakable ornaments, etc on it.

Not sure what we'll do this year. we want to try a real tree, but DS is more 'into' things than DD.

  • Buy shatter resistant ornaments. You can find decent ones all over the place.

Last year, we just didn't decorate the bottom half of the tree (except for lights). DS did okay with it, after the first 47,238 times we told him not to touch it.

    I like privacy. A lot.
  • I was going to do lights on the top half of the tree and cloth ornaments (maybe even make my own) on the bottom of the tree. Also my mom suggested that when we were little she baked ornaments with some kind of kid-friendly clay and painted them.

We also will have a fake tree this year (hopefully it will be sturdy enough and won't be knocked over).

If all else fails we will be corralling it with a baby gate

  • DD actually did fine with it last year.  We put the breakable stuff up high, and the plastic stuff down at the bottom.  She had a couple of ornaments down towards the bottom that she really liked and she always wanted to carry around, but they were plastic so we didnt mind.

  • I've been thinking about this alot. I think we are going to get shatterfroof plastic balls and just have those and lights. All of my normal ornaments are blown glass and I would be so sad if those broke.

  • We considered putting the tree up on Christmas Eve after DS went to bed, and then taking it down on Christmas night. But that's no fun.

So instead we are planning on just not putting lights on it (a prelit one is a good idea, but we don't have one of those) and getting some plush and shatterproof ornaments from Wal-Mart to use for this year. It's a 4 foot tree, and it won't be a waste of money to get the new ornaments because when we move out of this apartment and get a big tree, we plan on letting that be DS tree. We also don't have to worry about him pulling it down on himself, because it's small and light so if he does it won't do any damage.

ETA: Oh, and we're not going to put the presents out until Christmas Eve, because we KNOW he'd open them ;)

  • My plan is to block off the room the tree is in (with the storage boxes the ornaments are stored in or a baby gate-but our tree is usually 9-10 ft tall and very, very fat at the bottom).. We'll see how long that lasts.

  • I just plan on blocking it with the superyard if its an issue. I will put the glass/small parts ornaments up high. She is generally good about listening, but if she gets too curious I will block it. That way it will keep DH out of the gifts, too :p
  • Last year we kept the breakable ornaments on the top half. There were still ornaments that he could reach, but they were plastic and it was a learning experience for DS.
