Is your partner going with you to 1st Dr. Appt?

I wasn't sure if most people do this, or do they wait until maybe the 1st ultrasound?

Re: Is your partner going with you to 1st Dr. Appt?

  • DH came to all the dr.s appointments with my first and the confirmation appointment for this one. But he has a flexable schedule so it was no big deal for him to come.

  • I only plan for DH to come to ultrasounds.  He doesn't get home til 6 so it's difficult to make appointments around his schedule.  Plus, I don't want him taking time off now for appointments, I'd rather him save his time for when we have the baby.
  • Yep, DH is coming to everything with me!  I have no clue what to expect, so I want him there Smile

  • My H is coming to the first appointment with me, but I am also having an US.

  • Yes, by DH took the whole day off of work to go with me. I didn't think he needed to be there for first one, but my Dr.'s office said that he should be there for history information and we may or may not have an u/s. Our first appointment is at 7 weeks 5 days.
  • Yes. Dh has a crazy schedule between work and school, but he is going to try and make as many of the appointments as possible.

  • He did last time. This time my schedule was less flexible to get in, so I'm not sure if he can make it. It's first thing in the AM so perhaps he could go in late... I'd be really bummed if they do an US and he isn't there =(

  • My first appointment is just with the nurse (at 7 weeks) so I don't think I'll bring him - but the 2nd appointment (at 8 weeks) is with the Dr and includes an ultrasound, so they told me to definitely bring DH along for that one. I can't wait for the u/s - I think it will make this seem real to us!

  • He's coming with because they want a family history from both sides.

  • He came to my "unofficial" first appt. last week when I was bugging out about cramps.  That was only because we went straight from work and we work at the same place.

He is not planning on going to my "official" first appointment on 10/18 with the midwife, but will be at the one the week after with the doctor and hopefully first ultrasound.

  • Yes, he'll go to nearly all of them.  With my first child, he came to each one, other than a last-minute appt I had scheduled for that day.  We usually made them a month out, so it wasn't too difficult to schedule them during times that he was able to be there.

  • He'll definitely be going with me.  I think if we can schedule it accordingly he'll be going to most of my appointments.

  • Yes. He will be coming to my first appointment. The doctor's office suggested that he come since it's our first child and they will be providing us with a lot of information. DH has every Thursday off from work, so I'm hoping I'll be able to schedule the majority of my appointments on Thursdays so he'll have the opportunity to come with me without taking any leave from work.

  • Yep, he is coming to at least the first appointment with me. His work schedule is flexible, so it's not a big deal anyway.

I'm thinking (well, hoping) that there will be a lot of information-sharing at this first appointment, and I'd like to have a second set of ears to help me remember everything. I'm not familiar with the hospital here yet, so I hope we can find out information about tours and childbirth classes too.

  • Yes. At first I wasn't going to have him come, because we won't be doing a u/s and I think it will mostly be paperwork- but he has the time slot free and I'd really like him to be there (also in case he needs his family history or has any questions of his own).

  • I will be checking with the Dr. to find out what they will be doing at the appointment, and we agreed if they are doing an U/S he will be going with me.  If they aren't then he will not go.  Luckily after this first one I will probably try to schedule the appointments on Saturday because they are open on Saturday's as well.  Other then that we will try to work it out where we can both make it.

I work from 8:30-5:30 though and where as my job just kind of lets me go to appointments as I please or prior to 4:00 (there's no one to cover me then) or during my 1 hour lunch schedule.  He works 6:00 to 2:30 and doesn't have a very flexible schedule.  We will do our best to not risk either of our jobs though.

  • MH did, but he ended up sitting in the waiting room.  He will probably go to the others too, but you never know how the next ones will go I guess.  I'd rather have him there than not.  KWIM?
  • yes, dh is coming!  i actually had to change the appointment to match his schedule

  • Yes- MH is absolutely being dragged to our first, and probably all of our, appointments. I want him to expirence everything since this is our first.

This pretty much. He came to all appointments except two with DD, one was an u/s because my mom and my little sister wanted to come see. He had a really relaxed schedule at that time and now it's going to be a lot tougher. He will be at my 1st appointment and 1st u/s this time at least and then try to be at all other u/s.

  • My DH wants to come to all of them--since he works down the street from our birth center (and across the street, literally, from the hospital our ultrasound will be at,) it's easy for him to do this.  We're pretty equal partners in everything we do, and we don't see this any differently.  That said, our first appointment will be at 10-12 weeks, so we'll get to hear the heartbeat <3

  • I already had one, and was glad he was there. I think it made it a little more real for him, and it's good to have a second pair of ears since my mind is always racing. We did do an ultrasound (at not even 6 wks) though. The next one is in 2 weeks and it's the gender screening, etc. as well as another ultrasound. He had to tell work to explain the dr. appointments, but they had no problem with it once he did.

  • He is. Not for all of them though. Just the big ones.
  • I've had 2 appointments so far (one with the RE and one with the OB) and he hasn't come to either.  The RE was an u/s but scheduled last minute and he couldn't make it.  The OB was scheduled weeks ago and was supposed to be just for a pap but I ended up being pregnant.  He will only come to a few appts, I'm sure - like our u/s next Tuesday.  The rest would be really boring for him.

  • MH is coming Wed for the u/s. Not to the first appointment, but to all ultrasound ones and what not. I'm lucky in that we both work in the hospital where we are going to be seeing our OB, so if ever I really need him I can just call him over Big Smile
  • Yep! My DH will most likely be going to all of them, especially at first.

  • I'm still seeing my RE, before he transfers me over to my OB.. so, my first official appointment after finding out I'm pregnant is next Wednesday's u/s.. my husband will definitely be there for that. I think he'll try to be there for any appointment after that, that involves an u/s.

  • DH will go becasue we have an ultrasound at the first appointment which I'll be 8 wks at. The only other appointment that DH will probably go to is the big ultrasound. With DD all the other appointments were quick and uneventful and I'd see no point on DH attending those.

  • DH will be at the first one for sure. He will also be at the ultrasound(s) if we can schedule it. For the rest it really depends on his schedule.
  • It's funny b/c I made the 1st ob/gyn appt due to a phone call I made to the nurses asking what the fuzzy plus signs meant and they told me to schedule. I was mostly convinced I wasnt pregnant (1st month trying) so I scheduled it just thinking I would cancel it or go on my own...the MH was like...hmm ok I think I can take the day off - and i was like..OH right - you should be there too! :P Just the surreal-ness of it all!

He plans to be there for all - like PP we are partners in most everything so - we definitely will be doing all of these steps together.

  • Yes. He will most likely be at all of them, especially the "big ones", as long as I can make it work around his work schedule.
  • He's coming with me to the first one at 9 weeks, since they told me we'll hear the heartbeat (and I assume have an ultrasound?).  I'm not sure if I'll bring him to all of the appointments, but certainly those where we'll be doing ultrasounds.

For routine appts, esp if the doc does pelvic exams on me, I can see him feeling awkward standing in the room for that.  But at the first appointment I assume they'll be taking/giving lots of information so it'll be good for him to be there.

  • From my experience with my first pregnancy, I would say the first appt. is the most important for your partner to attend (besides the ultrasounds). They go over a lot of info and personal history. If your partner can make it, I would definitely ask them to come along.

  • DH wants to come to all of my appointments but he's in Iraq. Once he gets home he is hoping to go to all of the remaining appointments.
