Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Sadly, I'm New Here... (ticker warning)

I was hopeful that I didn't have to post here, but unfortunately, I'm here now.  I'm currently having a miscarriage.  I was about 7.5 weeks when I started spotting.  I started having severe cramping today and went back for an ultrasound to confirm the m/c.  We're devastated, of course.

I was wondering if anyone here had experience with Cytotec to induce the miscarriage?  I've been reading on the internet and freaking myself out with reading horror stories.  I'm planning to take it tomorrow morning, but I'm really nervous about it.  The clinic thought that things would happen this weekend based on the u/s today, but I have a D&C scheduled for Monday morning in case it doesn't.

Anyway, I'd appreciate anyone's experiences with the medication...good or bad.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I used cytotec very briefly before my procedure. It caused some cramping and loose stools. I used it vaginally. Ask your doctor for some pain medicine for cramps or take higher doses of motrin. You may also want to have a medicine like zofran on hand. Sometimes it makes people nauseous which you may be prone to if you had any nausea with your pregnancy. My procedure was how I passed the tissue, so sorry not to have more info than that. Hope the physical part is as easy as possible. ((HUGS))

  • I'm very sorry for your loss.  I took the Cytotec about a month ago.  If I ever have to go thru it again I'm getting a D&C.

I used the 4 pills around 8pm.  I was a little crampy by about 10pm.  By 11pm I was in serious pain, bleeding heavily & passing huge clots/tissue.  Most of the pain was over about 2am & I was able to get to sleep.  I passed more clots/tissue the next two days and then bled/spotted for about a week.  I would say I was pretty miserable for 2-days.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • I've never used cytotec but wanted to say sorry for your loss.
  • Thanks all...I do appreciate it.  I did take the Cytotec this morning but nothing has happened.  In fact, I actually don't have any/much cramping today while yesterday was just horrible.  So...I'm not really sure what's going on....the D&C on Monday seems pretty likely as from what I read, the meds should have kicked in right away.  I was hoping that it could happen somewhat 'naturally' so I wouldn't have to go in for the procedure.
  • I do not have any advice for you, I just wanted to say I am so sorry for your loss.  The women here are amazing, and I'm glad you found this board.

  • Hi, I had a miscarriage diagnosed on October 11 at 9 Weeks and had a D & C done on October 13 so that morning I took the Cytotec to try to open up the cervix so the D & C would be easier.  It didn't work.  I didnt feel any cramps or have any bleeding.  After the procedure, my doctor said that the Cytotec never dissolved so that's why I never felt anything or had any bleeding.  I was worried also when I read all the horror stories of the painful cramps and heavy bleeding but luckily didnt have any.  Since my D & C I have had slight bleeding, like a period and also period like cramps and backaches.  The procedure wasn't bad at all, actually I don't remember a thing except when they gave me the sleepy medicine (which was realllly good stuff!)  Good Luck and I'm sorry for your loss.
