  • I think you need to have a talk with your doctor and discuss exactly what they are worried about.  That is a very fair question!

I had one NST at about 34 weeks when I was pregnant with my daughter.  It was because my blood pressure was getting a tad high and they wanted to make sure my DD was doing okay.  I "failed" the NST (she hated that stinkin' monitor and even during labor would "run away" from it) and needed a biophysical ultrasound.  She passed the biophysical with flying colors.

They are stressful because you obviously want your baby to be doing all of the "healthy" things.  But you need to be informed about what the concern is and what the plan is should you continue to fail it.

  • Did you eat a good meal before you went?  I have a NST every Thursday due to high bp and yesterday was the first time I've encountered any issues.  For some reason baby was just being lazy and they made me drink a bottle of grape juice.  After about an hour, he finally started responding enough to pass his test.  It was definitely a bit stressful.  Just make sure you keep feeling your baby move throughout the day.
  • My first nst, resulted in prolonged monitoring over at the hospital, where they cut off food and drink for me from 9am till they discharged me at 10:30pm, after dehydrating me (causing contractions to show on monitor) and stressing me sufficiently enough with talks of emergency c sections ahh talk about stress. This happened at 32 weeks.

Since then I have found that it is important to eat a good meal before you go and bring juice or water to sip before and throughout your test, if you have different nurses do your nst you may notice slight differences in their application of straps and monitors, Some will tell you to lay on your side somewhat as you recline, others may only use one band for both monitors.

My best advice for you as I am going through this myself, is to make sure they are telling you exactly the reasons for monitoring you for a prolonged period of time, ( I have actually found out that most of this is paperwork and hospital policies to keep the lawyers happy in case of incident) Yes they have your babies interest at heart but if your baby is still small and giving the monitor a good kick then swimming away whilst the nurses chit chat amongst themselves then you graph may not show what the doc feels is and acceptable strip/graph for them to sign off on.

Try not to freak out, stay hydrated and if you can bring someone with you that is not scared to ask questions if you become overwhelmed.

    Best of luck.
