Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Repost from BF-3 Month Old Hurting Me While Nursing...

I know he doesn't mean to, but my DS has been hurting me the last week while nursing.  He kicks his little legs, scratches my chest/neck/face, hits me.  When I act like I'm hurt he gives me a giggle and or smile.

He nurses during this but he is busy looking around too.  Sometimes he nurses for a minute then pulls off, then goes back on, etc.

I have tried to nurse in more quiet places like his nursery, our room.  I hold his little hand but he gets mad that I'm restraining it.  Ugh. I didn't think I would have to deal with this until he was 5/6 months.

If he were older I'd just tell him that that wasn't nice and put him down.  But at this age, I don't think he will understand.   Any ideas?

  • Both of mine have done the same thing at times...unfortunately, I think it's one of those things that you just have to wait it out and it will pass in a week or two.  At this point, he can't really control his arms and legs, so there's not much we can do except make sure their nails are clipped!!

  • Jack does this also, but only when he is on the left side....he flails his arm up at me and pulls at my shirt, pinches me....I know he is getting milk, I hear him, it is frustrating!

  • Caden does this too. Like a PP said....it will pass. He eventually gives up laughing at me and kicking his leg or grabbing his feet and just eats.

  • My DS went through this same thing when he was about 3 months old. It seemed like he was just figuring out that he was capable of "doing things" with his hands and legs, like he was gaining control over them better. He'd pinch me, hit me with his arms, scratch me and kick.

Just as I was starting to worry it would last forever, he stopped doing it.

  • DS does this as well! I ordered a "nursing necklace" from Etsy to give him something to grab onto other than me. So far it's worked pretty well...I can move his arm towards it and he'll hold on or pull/play with it. It doesnt work all the time, but he's pinched me far less often!

You could probably make your own, but I'm not that crafty and I wanted one that was sturdy and wouldn't fall apart.

  • Thank you ladies.  I never considered that it was because he now has better control of his body.  I guess when we encourage it when he's not eating, it's hard to discourage it when he is.  :)

But I do hope he grows out of it...Quick!!
