Political (jump in!)

Ok, so what annoys me about all the racist comments is that if I am not Pro-Obama, I get called a racist.  This annoys the hell out of me.  If McCain had picked Colin Powell as a running mate (or if Colin had run), I would be all over that ticket.

Not true. This isn't about McCain vs. Obama.  It's about right vs. wrong and racism in any form is WRONG!

  • Everyone has a right to choose who they want. If they tag you as a racist I guess they don't know you all that well. That's a prejudgement too. I
  • Uhhhh, who is calling you a racist?  Anyone that's going to call you a racist for not voting for Obama needs a throatpunch and a wake up call from reality.

  • Haha you really get racist comments just because you don't like Obama? That's ridiculous. People shouldn't pull the race card because you don't want to vote for him.  It doesn't matter what race anyone is who is running, it should be about how you feel about the issues and their. Just tell them that.
  • Hi love! I thought in America you were black if you have any black in you. Most African Americans are of mixed ancestry and they considered black. I understand your point though. He's mixed where I come from.

  • is this a general comment or are you referring to the posts yesterday and today? I don't recall anyone calling anyone else a racist just because they're not voting for Obama?
  • In a perfect world people would vote for candidates based on their platform and other research on the person. So it bugs me that people are pulling the race card on this, although we know it isnt a perfect world. And I think for someone to call you rasist because you dont like him as a candidate just means its in the back of THEIR mind.
  • Who has called those who aren't pro-Obama racist? I think what people have been offended by are the "jokes" associating anyone who is Muslim or from the Middle East with being a terrorist. Take that joke with the camel, how would people respond if that was in reference to an African American rather than someone from the Middle East?

I'm a very big Obama supporter and I don't think people are racist simply because they support McCain, as long as their reasons for supporting McCain are based on the issues and not on the fact that Obama's middle name is Hussein and briefly went to a Muslim school when he was 6.

  • In my own little head I think everyone is a "racist".  Call me crazy but anyone that prejudges someone/something is a racist.  But that is my opinion.  I am not for Obama nor am I really for McCain, but you have to choose the lesser of the evils.  Here's a silly fact I heard on my talk radio political station, Obama is in fact more an Arab than black.  Take it for what ever it's worth.
  • JasonsLyric...Um, I consider my daughter and baby bi-racial. I've always taught my daughter that she is African American and Caucasion not just one or the other.  So no it's not you are  black if you have any black in you...That reminds me of the old one drop rule...

  • I guess I should add that the DJ's that mentioned this fact are Obama supporters.  So it wasn't meant to be bashing him.  Just when things get going in here I have to leave!  Bummer.
  • First, I wouldn't refer to this as "fact" rather I would call it a claim. And I would love to see the basis for this claim. His father is from Kenya, which most certainly isn't an Arab part of Africa.
  • See, the thing is, it seems to be perfectly ok to make fun of Palin - hell SNL is raking in the bucks over it.  But make fun of Obama in any way, and you're racist.

The man DOES have a Muslim background - I'm not saying he is or isn't.  I'm not saying Muslim = Terrorist.  I will say, there does seem to be an inordinately large amount of Islamic/Muslim men and women who decide to blow themselves up for a cause, But that does not mean Muslim = Terrorist.

  • Totally agree with you!
  • Garnet,

Why do we call Halle Berry black? Well maybe I'm just generalizing. I'm not American and where I'm from most of us call mixed people mixed. I thought in the U.S. the one drop rule still applied. I'm sorry for my ignorance. I still say that you should vote for who you want and pulling the race card about that is kinda silly.

Why is saying Obama is not just black a bad thing? I don't get that comment. I'm not sure which nestie posted that.

  • SNL has also done skits making fun of McCain, Obama, and Biden. Palin has just given them more ammo. And no one has said it isn't okay to make fun of Obama - I watched the roast McCain and Obama gave to each other last night at that dinner and thought they were hilarious.

I just don't find racist based jokes funny, I find them offensive.

    sigh...

  • According to an article I just read, the USA now considers "race" to be a socio-ethnic choice, not an indicator of actual genetic history.  SO - if you feel you are AA, you are AA.  If you feel you are Asian, etc.  So if Obama FEELS he is black, he can say so.

To me, it's really irrelevant.  His skin color doesn't determine how he will run the country.

And to me, wanting something different from the administration we've had for the last 8 years doesn't equal choosing a candidate just because they keep shouting about change.  (or being a maverick, for that matter.)

The way I read her comment may have been wrong.  But it sounded like she was pissed off that people won't vote for him based on him being black and the reason it pissed her off was because he is not 100% black.  I think we shouldn't vote (or not vote) for anyone based on their sex/race.  Maybe I just jumped to conclusions about what she was saying.  I've confused myself a little...

Voting for McCain/Palin does not automatically make you a bigot.

Voting for Obama/Biden does not automatically make you not a bigot.

Making racist/bigotted jokes makes you a bigot.

Making ignorant statements like "I will say, there does seem to be an inordinately large amount of Islamic/Muslim men and women who decide to blow themselves up for a cause," make you come of as bigotted.  It does not matter who you're voting for.

Bigotted jokes are based on calling to mind ugly, defammatory, stereotypes about how someone is bad or dangerous because of their membership in a particular racial, ethnic, or religious group.

Saying, "Ha, ha! Biden doesn't know how many letters are in "jobs"" or "Ha, ha! Palin can see the moon from her house so she could be an astronaut" do not draw on centuries of discrimination.

    See the difference?

This whole posts hurts my head, but this:

Obama is in fact more an Arab than black

    Please, pretty please explain!

  • Oh! Thanks for clearing that up for me, Jessimurph. I don't think that's what she meant but if anybody did I might raise an eyebrow.
  • Okay I think I want to jump in on this...

In response to the "one drop" Jim Crow rule - although it is not politically correct to say he is black just because he has black blood - I think that many African-Americans (or black people - whatever your choice of words) go by this rule because as African-Americans we are viewed by the color of our skin.  Is it right?  nope but it is fact.  I love the fact that someone is teaching their child to respect and honor and love both of their heritages - and believe me when I say most of my friends who are of mixed heritages are taught the same thing but if you asked them what is their nationality they will tell you black.  That is a fact.  That is how they are treated...and I know it is a hard pill to swallow (like my damn PNV) but it is the truth.  Race in America is still a very big deal - and Racism runs rampant.

Someone mentioned SNL joking and making fun of Palin - well if you remember before Obama became the democratic choice they did plenty to make fun of him.  I think they focused on him early on in the races (as they did with Hillary and the rest of the runners) because at that time he was the "fresh new face" of politics.  That was 2 years ago - and now Palin is the frest new face of politics.  So she is a target...not to mention some of the stuff she says has that WTF response from both sides of the ticket...I mean really - I can see Russia from my house???? Come on now really...I can tell a million jokes off that one alone...but the fact that she has given SNL so much to work with - dont blame that on race and / or sex - blame it on her not being prepped by her team of people.

Anyway, back to the real topic....I dont think that anyone has a right to call anyone a racist unless they can prove it beyond a doubt - but then what?  So you called them a racist - does it make you feel better?  Nope.  Its a word that is used to describe someone who is ignorant of color, but then what?  I think we as people need to learn how to better direct our frustrations and anger, because in the end - after you called them a racist - they are still who they are and you are still you.

Now let me just say this for the record just because you are not racist there are plenty of people out there who have said for the record that they will not vote for a black man as president.  I know it might be hard to accept in this so called "post racial" society but it is true...so while you arent a racist there are plenty of people who are.

Whoever you decide to support - that is your personal choice.  I think I would have more of a problem if you just threw your vote out and didnt vote at all.  Dont get sucked into all the drama of this political season.  Remember you have to do what is right for you - if its McCain - then that is who it is.

Okay now thats my 2 cents for the day on politics....I hope I didnt step on anyones toes - but in the same sense if I did - maybe you need to look at why your so offended...

  • Sorry - you're still picking and choosing what to get your panties bunched about.  Sorry - sometimes jokes are not politically correct.  Not being politically correct does not make anybody racist OR bigotted.  Are there racist and biggoted people out there? HELL YEAH.  I doubt anybody on this board truly is, and for you all to be so up in arms about it is ridiculous.

Actually, yeah - there are a lot of things in our society that are based on opinions, or judeo-christian belief systems that are our OPINIONS - mores and norms for what we have decided is wrong, that may or may not be seen the same way in other cultures.

    That's a great post, Mrs.Bible.

I think what's so hard for some of us is that race is so NOT a part of our everyday thinking anymore.  I have friends from every different background under the sun.  The vast majority of my kids friends are mixed.  It was beat into my head, and naturally flowed to my children that race makes no difference.  Manners, behavior, how you comport yourself - that all makes a difference to me.

So it's just really hard to hear somebody accuse you of racism because you laughed at a politically incorrect joke, or because you support a candidate they don't agree with, or whatever.  To hear Whoopi Goldberg say we've grown up in two different worlds (which arguably, Whoopi and Elisabeth had, because they're different generations) is frustrating to me.  I live in one world.  I live in a world that goes beyond the borders of my city, my state, my country - hell, in some ways even  my planet (Space station, not Mars).  I live in one world with everyone else.

We are NOT all going to agree.  We are NOT all going to have the same set of values.  We are NOT all going to laugh at the same jokes.  But that doesn't mean it's necessary to get so bent on a pregnancy board that you're wishing ill will and pain on other people.

    1.  The pic yesterday was not making fun of Obama it was creating more hatred and prejudiced by comparing him to a terrorist.  Some chick had a siggy with Palin as HItler and she got flamed for that too.  Calling Obama a terroist is not funny Ha Ha like you think it is.

    2.  Palin is made fun of because she brought it on herself. Couric interview=comedy gold.  If Obama had sputtered any of the idiocracies he'd be fair game.  But he hasn't so he's not.

    3. Making fun of Arabs, AA, anorexics, Polish, and fat people is NOT funny.  Ever. And I never laugh at these jokes.

I think it is very easy for people to say these are just jokes - "thicken your skin" and all of that but the problem is unless you have been a target of racism then you dont know how negatively it affects you.

I know that I have had people refuse to wait on me; I moved into a predominantly white neighborhood and for the first 3 to 6 months me and my husband were stopped at night for bogus reason and questioned about where we were going; I have had to explain to my 7 y.o. step daughter what a *** when her "friend" told her that her father wouldnt allow her at her birthday party because she was one....and I am not even going to tell you about the KKK parade that I witness in Atlanta my freshman year of college...

So you see when people says jokes and what have you that arent politically correct or they want to use it for controversy - then you have to understand that it affects us all differently based off of our past experiences.

I know that if someone said something off to me - then they risk the chance of me going off on them...its just a fact.

Now am I being too sensitive based off of the few things that I have told you I experienced....
