Tell me about PT boys

G tells me when he poops... after he does it. He's peed on the potty twice, but I think it was more of a coincidence. He likes to go and sit on the potty, but mostly so he can play with the toilet paper and flush the toilet.

He doesn't talk much, but he usually understands what I'm saying to him. I just don't know how to go about getting him to tell me before he goes.

Bah. That's what I'm scared of. Girls seem so much easier.

  • No advise from me, but look into the 3day potty training.  Everyone around me swears by it.

Mgr- your comment made me lol...I'm still trying to figure out how to change a wiggle worm without being sprayed and no matter what this lo's system is very explosive!

  • With C we waited until he expressed interested , which was about 2 months shy of 3 years old. He announced one day, "no more diapers, I go on the potty" and went from there. It took a good 2-3 months before he was totally trained, as in telling us when he had to go 95% of the time, few accidents, etc. Once he decided he was ready though, he refused to let us put a diaper on him and about 6 weeks into it he refused daytime pullups when we tried to use them.
  • for us, we waited until Joe was three.. actually a wee bit older.  He had expressed a bit of interest but not enough to really get us training.  Then when all of his friends started moving up, I talked to one of his teachers and she said...

let him run naked.  Completely naked.  And tell him... when you have to go potty, you tell me.  And you don't poop on the floor!!!!  :)

We did that for about a week and really just a weekend.  And it worked.

But, waiting until HE is ready is key.  at least it was for us.

    Good luck!

  • Honestly it has not been horrible.  J was 2.5 and it took 2 weeks.  There were a few accidents along the way but nothing traumatizing to either of us.

  • Luca sat on the potty naked for the first time last night.  Nothing happened, but we made a big deal about it...  I can tell this is NOT going to be fun...
  • We started our no-stress potty training when he was 2.5.

Like I've mentioned before, my friend said to just take it all very casually. She trained her daughter the year before and said I would figure out when he was ready, and then it would be easy.

She was right about that. We just offered potty, took the successes we got, and laid back. Eventually we had #1 success, and then had to work a little to get him past anxiety related to #2.

By 3 he was trained. In the middle, it felt like it would never happen. Then, one day, he just turned a corner and never went back.

Mind you, he and my friend's child were in daycare - peer pressure is a big motivator at any age.

  • We've taken a very laid back approach and have been fairly successful.

He loves going potty. We ask him several times a day; sometimes he says yes and goes, other times he says no.

We plan on taking it slow and seeing what happens over the next few weeks...

  • We went straight to undies at 2 year 7 months when he showed a lot of interest and was waking up dry.  We spent a week mostly at home, and he pretty much had #1 down.  After another week of our normal routine with no accidents away from home and very few at home, he figured out #2, and we were pretty set.  He did have a little constipation the first couple of days, but it all worked out.  He had very few accidents, and I think part of it was that he was truly ready, and the other part was that there was no confusion about the transition.
