Breastfeeding

Question about 1-week-old

My one-week old is eating for 45 min to an hour for some feedings (most of the time in the late morning/evening) and then for 5 minutes or 10 minutes others.

For the shorter feedings, she'll have one good latch session before pulling off and falling asleep. Is this common or do I need to work harder to wake her up during/after the short feedings?

  • DS was like this, and I never woke him up.  As long as your LO is gaining weight and having enough wet diapers, I'd let her eat for as long as she wants, whether it's 45 minutes or 5 minutes.  I'd still ask your pedi though at your next appointment.

  • My DS does this;  a lot of feedings he will doze off after 5-10 minutes.  Usually when this happens, I will try to burp him then just hold him in a cradle position;  he will often wake up after several minutes and start rooting and sucking on his hands again so I know he wasn't done eating.  Or I hand him over to my DH or someone else and he will wake up shortly after that and look for food - I guess when he doesn't feel or smell me.  If he stays asleep for more than 10-15 min I will try to lay him down in his bassinet and if he doesn't wake up then I let him sleep however long.  Basically, if he will stay asleep I assume he was actually satisfied, and if he doesn't stay asleep I'll just start feeding him again, even though it drags out his feeding sessions a lot sometimes.  I think this is just how he is right now.
