Benadryl to DS for a nasty cold?

If so what were the results? Did it work?

A pediatrician friend of mine suggested giving a small dose at night to LO who is suffering from a nasty cold.  He is not sleeping or eating well, runny nose all over the place, coughing and miserable!

Im seriously considering it and wondering abt other people's results....thanks!

  • I haven't used it, but pedi said to have it in the house in case he gets a sudden food allergy. He said Children's Liquid Benadryl - 1/2 tsp. The box says to not uses for children under 2, but I guess it's fine periodically in a small dose if pedi says so.

  • I thought studies had shown that cold remedies were of no benefit to a baby with a cold.  We just use saline spray, aspirator and lots of nursing.

  • Seems like there is a lot of conflicting advice....we have tried saline drops, humidifier, johnsons vapor bath, nasal aspirator, baby tylenol...they all usually work but this cold is a doozy and Im searching for something to help my poor DS

  • As hard as it is to watch them be sick, my Pedi said absolutely no Benadryl. Also, I'm surprised your Pediatrician friend would suggest that, Benadryl can have the opposite effect and would keep your LO up for hours.

  • I haven't tried it, but from what I understand it can help dry up some of the mucous.  There is a change the benadryl will make your LO hyperactive though which won't help the sleep situation.

My friend bought this for her LO and said it totally helped her breathe and she STTN even though she was really sick.

  • yes, our pedi has "prescribed" it for bad colds for both my girls. It does help a little with drying up some mucus, but it doesn't make a huge difference. I feel like it definitely helps DD2 sleep better, but DD1 tends to wake up more often nights that we've given it to her.

DD2 now gets 3/4 tsp, as needed (around 20 lbs dose). DD1 gets 1 tsp (at 27 lbs that was the dose).

HERE is the Dr. Sears info on it, with dosage chart.

  • I wouldn't.  A friend of mine just visited our mutual pedi after her 2 year old was stung by a bee and had some facial swelling and even at that age they told her to try not to give benedry unless absolutely necessary.  I would never give it just for a cold (as much as they stink and keep baby up).
