Has anyone ever sold their gold jewelry?

I see all those ads on TV about "cash for gold", etc.
And I know there are radio ads here all the time from jewelry stores, pawn shops, etc wanting you to bring in your gold and that they have the "best deal" over anyone.

I don't really have any gold laying around other than a class ring that I never wear, but I'm just curious if anyone has actually done it and thought it was a good deal.

  • I haven't, but the commercials make me smile.  Especially, the lady who talks about selling her wedding rings.  Lol.

  • Honestly I think it's a rip off. I had two very nice gold necklaces from an ex-boyfriend. I took them to two local nice jewlers and they both offered me practically pennies. Long story short I still have the necklaces in a drawer.
  • i'd take it to an actual store, but my brother sold his class ring for about $200.

  • I just sold some random old necklaces and some earrings and got $317. I'd call a couple places in town and see what they pay. One place I called paid $12.50 per gram and the place I went to was $17.95 per gram - so that is quite a difference. Call around and check the better business bureau too on that company before you go to check to make sure they are legit.
  • they did some thing on Dateline or 20/20 that showed most of those online operations are total ripoffs and don't pay you anywhere near what your jewelry is really worth. I would go around to a few jewelers if I did it. Not that I have any I want to sell right now.

I know...that cracks me up.  Exactly how many wedding rings?  hehe
I definitely don't trust those online ones at all.  Too sketchy.

  • MIL's sister has "gold parties" She has a kit to weigh the gold and tell if its 14k, 24k etc. I found a few random things and got around $100 (NOT what I was expecting) then I went to her again and got like $280. But, she also didn't take any of the profit from selling it to her "gold guy" I know someone else who just brought their gold to a jeweler and got 2 grand! I think it could definitely be worth it!
