Hi Everyone-- For years before we got pregnant, my husband has wanted to name our baby Ace. Now i'm pregnant with a boy and really liked the name too...until my family heard about it. They said i will 'ruin his life" if i name him Ace. They said its too weird and not a "real name". In my opinion, they should mind there own business. There are plenty of "weird" names out there that are much worse than Ace, and for the past 6 months i've been thinking of him as Ace. My friends have been really supportive so that is nice. What do you guys think? We plan to give him a traditional middle name that can be used with initials if he chooses (Ace Joseph, AJ). We do not want to just use it as a nickname. Thanks for your feedback.

Uhhhh.....Yea Ace is sometimes used when you really want to call someone @$$
I think of Ace Freeley - KISS .....
Ace makes me think Douche.
There was a douchey Ace on American Idol and a douchey Ace on an old season of Real World.
ETA: That sounded really harsh when I read it back. That's just my association with the name.
I personally think it sounds like a nickname. I would much prefer to see a child named Ace have a formal name to fall back on. That being said, there were 414 baby boys named Ace born in the US last year, so it's not quite as unheard of as your family might think. I have serious doubts about it ruining his life.
It seems like you've already made up your mind. Why even ask? If he hates it, he will go by AJ, or even A. Joseph Surname.

It's one of those names that people are going to say, really? That's your name? That said, if you both love it, and think he can defend himself in school and you can defend it, then keep it on your list.
I agree - there are weird names out there, and I generally prefer word names over tryndy/cre8ive. Actually, strike that. I'd take word over those any day.

I'm also surprised to see that it's been in the top 1000 early in the beginning of the SSA Names list (1882, 1903). I'm sure the recent boost has been because of the celebrity baby name.

I do like the name. Sue me!! But, there are some bad/weird associations.
Ace, the guy from Real World New Orleans (I think) - he was a real winner... NOT!!
And there's always Ace Ventura... quite possibly one of my favorite movies of all time.

What about Asa?
I wouldn't name my child that, but if you and YH like it, I say go for it. I like the idea of using a more traditional MN, so he can go by that (or, like a PP said, AJ) if he chooses.
While it sounds like a nickname (and apparently a derogatory word), there are definitely worse names.
This is what I was thinking. Give your kid a real name - even a related name - and then call him Ace. But your family is right - Ace sounds terribly unprofessional / low-class and your kid will almost certainly take some hits because of it.
I like Ace. Somewhere in the recesses of my brain has me remembering it as meaning 'First' in biblical Greek. ( Dont quote me on that but I had a friend that was taking Greek and one of her vocab words was Ace and it meant first, in the masculine and Ava meant the same in the feminine. I of course wanted boy -girl twins named Ace and Ava.)
I think that I agree with pp that say its better as a nickname. Of course, other kids in Kindergarten with love him at Valentines day for having a short name.
