High-Risk Pregnancy

GD - Growth Ultrasound

For ladies who have GD or especially those with a diagnosis on a previous pregnancy: how soon after diagnosis did your doc start doing growth ultrasounds? How often did you get the growth ultrasounds? If your doc determined that you needed to be induced early, when did he or she make that determination? How far along were you when you got induced?

Sorry for all the questions!

Re: GD - Growth Ultrasound

  • I had GD with my DS.  I had u/s every other week starting with the diagnosis at the high risk doctor.  My GD was diet controlled and my sugars were fine, but my son was very large.  At 36 weeks we made the (joint) decision to do a c/s at 38 weeks.  My doctor does not like GD patients to go past 38 or 39 weeks so I knew from the time of my diagnosis that I would be induced early.

  • I was diagnosed with GD on Sept. 12 and didn't have a growth ultrasound until 2 weeks ago.  I will have another one after 36 weeks.  They have said they will not be making a decision about c-section or early induction until after the 2nd scan, a few more weeks of looking at my BSL and seeing how things go with my NSTs.  But if LO is still measuring with a large belly then I will have a c-section.  It will just be a matter of deciding which week.  Right now, I'm just preparing for a c-section at 38 weeks and if that's not what happens then I'll be ready either way.  I started out wanting a home water birth, so I've wanted to prepare myself mentally for a c-section so if that's the news I get in a few weeks I won't start freaking out then.

  • I am insulin dependent GD and I normally have 2 growth ultrasounds around 33-34 weeks and again at 38 weeks.  I do start getting two NST's a week at 30 weeks.   They induce me at 39 weeks.  This is my third GD pregnancy.  My first was not GD and he was 7lb 10oz at 40w2d.  My 2nd and 3rd were 9lb10oz and 9lb 5oz at 39w.  I have a feeling this baby may end up being a C-section.

  • I was insulin dependent with DD (and am again this time). Diagnosed 1st time around 24 wks and had an u/s every month plus NSTs weekly starting around 30 wks, I think.

This time diagnosed at 14 wks and have no idea when they'll start the extra testing since I haven't even had my 20 wk u/s yet. I imagine I'll find out next week since that will be my first visit with the OB after my diagnosis and starting insulin.

ETA: 1st time around, I was slated to be induced at 39wks as soon as I started insulin, otherwise it would've been 40wks. Baby started measuring big, so they wanted to induce at 37wks. My gut said they were wrong, and they were. Waited until 39 wks and DD was 6 lb 11 oz - petite. Since I ended up with a c/s after 28 hrs of labor last time, I'm going with a scheduled c/s this time. We'll schedule it at my 22wk appointment.

  • I have type 1, not GD, but my first growth u/s was today (27w) and I will have them every month / 4 weeks ish, until I deliver (unless they decide I should come more often).

I have a c/s scheduled for 38w2d for this pg. With DD, they induced at 36w5d due to failing a NST and pregnancy induced high blood pressure. If all was fine, I would have not been induced until 38w4d or so.

  • Thanks all. I have my first growth ultrasound on Friday at 28 wks 3 days.
  • I had my first one on September 20th and my doctor wanted to see me three weeks later (which would have been yesterday) but they did not have any appointments available that I could go to, so I will be going back next Monday. My OB said my belly was measuring big though, but has not mentioned an induction nor a c-section yet. I wonder if the peri will mention either at my next appointment on Monday.

  • I had a growth ultrasound 2 weeks after I found out I had GD.  Baby measured in 95th percentile, but my doc said for now, that's fine.  I don't know how many more ultrasounds/NSTs I get, but I go for a regular appt on Monday and I'm sure she'll let me know then.  She has mentioned they would likely induce at 39 weeks.

  • My growth u/s isn't scheduled until 34 weeks.  Not sure if I would have one earlier if my numbers are hard to control or I have to go on insulin.  As of right now, the plan is to start natural induction techniques at 26 weeks and see what happens, but I think they would medically induce me if I go beyond my due date (depending on how the baby is growing).

  • I haven't had one scheduled yet and my OB hasn't mentioned one.  I think my fundal height is only measuring a week to two weeks ahead at this point, which he says is fine.  I was diagnosed mid-August.  I started weekly NST's last week.

I should add that I'm insulin dependent for fasting numbers.
