Need advice on calorie intake!

Hello again, so here's my issue, briefly, I will be 19 weeks pregnant this week, with twin boys and I have not been much of a drinker EVEN when im NOT pregnant (meaning I don't drink water or any type of liquids as much as I should in general) With that in mind, I eat 3 times a day and I have 1 or 2 snacks throughout the day but I hardly think I make it past 1700 calories a day which my OB says Id need at least 2000 calories a day for my boys and I just dont know how to eat that much food in one day! I def dont eat just to eat or eat when I'm hungry and in my house my husband and I eat fairly healthy throughout the weeks. Proteins, veggies, dairies, ect are all included in my everyday diet with the ocassional fast foods when Im craving it which is rarely! Anyhow, I just get concerned at times that my babies are not getting enough fluids or calories they need throughout the day although thankfully when I go for my 2 weeks check-ups they are fine. I also have to force myself to drink as much water as I can throughout the day. Don't get me wrong I love to eat but only when I feel hungry. How can I learn to eat more and drink more without forcing myself to do so when I dont feel hungry? Or is the way Im eating normal?

  • Don't force yourself to eat!

On days when I had trouble getting food in (those days were few and far between during my pregnancy, but they did exist!) I made sure to drink Ensure.  It has the extra protein that I had a hard time getting in.  I had an aversion to most meat for awhile.

  • I don't have much advice for you, but am looking forward to hearing others thoughts on this too because I was told to eat more at my appointment today - although I feel like I am eating constantly already!!  My plan is to keep small healthy snacks around me...crackers with cheese, apples, carrots, nuts.  Then just have a little something every hour or so.

ETA:  As for fluids, maybe add a flavor to your water.  Sometimes a little lemon is enough to help me get down an extra glass or two a day.

  • I am trying to follow Dr. Luke's book. It is a ton to eat but it seems that it is so important to eat the right things and gain weight for your babies. I am sure there are a lot of opinions out there but I am sticking with hers.

  • I feel your pain - I have GD and my nutritionist said I should be eating about 3000 calories a day for my height/appropriate weight gain.

Let's just say I eat a lot of cheese and most days, I don't make it to any where near 3000. I just do the best I can to eat wisely and always snack.

  • It sounds like you have the right idea.  I find myself eating every 2-3 hours.  I eat 3 well balanced meals and many snacks in between.  I always keep water by my side and sip on it through out the day as well as chewing on chopped ice, that is more for my heartburn.  You don't want to get dehydrated because it can cause contractions, etc.  Other then fruits, veggies and proteins, I always try to eat good fats and avoid sodium when ever possible.  When I do eat I try to add extra things to it so I can increase the calories.  For an example Avocado, greek yogurt with granola and fruit, protein shakes, crackers and cheese, milk shakes, apple and peanut butter, peanut butter sandwich, trail mix, eggs,  and banana spilts. YUM! :)   keep eating to help those babies grow. :)
  • My dr told me at my last appointment that I needed to eat more/gain more.  His recommendations were to drink whole milk, which at first I thought ew yuck...but its really not that much different than 2%.  Sometimes I just mix whole milk with 1% or 2% depending on what we have on hand too.  Or throw some nesquik in and have chocolate milk!  Also, cheese is a great snack, its good calories, fat, protein plus calcium.  My dr also told me to eat a lot of beef.  Basically I think you want foods that are going to give you the most "bang for your buck", you know?  As for water, I tend to not drink enough water either, but I find that if I have ice cold water I will drink more.  Just tastes better to me.

  • This is the biggest fight (besides naming the girls) that DH and I have. My team of drs have told me to eat 2200 calories a day. I am still sick and throwing up. My dr told me yesterday to just eat as much as I can all day if at all possible, which is soooo hard, but he did say if I needed an extra push to get me up to calories, I needed to take up an obsession with mikshakes and that cheapo fast food restaruants were a good idea for me. It was a weird suggestion but I love milkshakes so I think I will take him up on that.
