Breastfeeding

BM feeding (bottle) question

If I have freshly pumped breast milk in the fridge (I pumped it this a.m.) and I warm it up to give to LO, but she doesnt' finish the bottle... what can I do with that remaining milk in the bottle?

Do I put it back in the fridge and then warm it up again later? How long can it last?

Or do I have to use it now at room temperature within a certain amout of time?

Thanks in advance! And to think, I nursed DD1 for a whole year and now I have these questions! I simply can't remember since I almost never bottle fed her. (I'm only giving DD2 a bottle today as a trial to see if she'll take it when she goes to day care in 2 weeks).

Re: BM feeding (bottle) question

  • I always just put the bottle back in the fridge and use it later.  The "rules" say once they have drunk from it to throw it out w/in 1 hour but we've never done that and DD is fine.  Frankly, too much work goes into BM to throw it out like that.  Just my opinion.  Good luck

Thanks! So how long would you let it stay in the fridge then? A day or two?

  • Everything ive ever read about breast milk says its fine to refrigerate leftovers within an hour and reheat for next feeding.  (Formula on the other hand must be thrown out after an hour and cannot be reheated.)  Personally i stretched the limits many times, but those are the guidelines.
  • Good question.  I thought you knew everything though!  LOL  I totally need a chat session with you soon.  We have had a rough few days.

  • My pedi told ne not to reuse bm from a bottle she drank from.  So I err on the side of caution and give her less to start, and keep refilling the bottle.  I'm still so new at pumping, I don't want to waste a single drop!
