Diaper Genie, Diaper Champ or Munchkin diaper pail?

I know people have different opinions on these..WDYT? Some say they're not worth it, some say they are amazing. DH and I thought about skipping it altogether b/c they really seem to get you on the cost of the refill bags but we're not confident we'd be diligent enough to take out the garbage everyday (we do about every other day anyway since we have a cat, but still..) I'd love to hear opinions on which one you all prefer!

Re: Diaper Genie, Diaper Champ or Munchkin diaper pail?

  • I liked the diaper genie for the first few months then we threw it away. Regardless of cleaning and keeping up with replacing the refill the smell was horrible. We just have a small garbage and buy the little "sassy" baby powder scented bags to put dirty diapers in and take the trash out every couple of days. Cheap and no odor.

  • We are doing a sturdy stainless steel trash can from Target with a step lid ($40) and using kitchen bags with odor blocker instead.  I heard from other moms that the plastic diaper pails absorb smells and that they do not work as well as a stainless steel trash can with a lid that seals well.  The odor blocker kitchen bags are much cheaper than branded diaper pail refills.

  • I have the Arm and Hammer one and like it.  Do I love it?  Well what is to love about any diaper pail- ha ha.  Seriously, we change about 70 percent of diapers on 1st floor and I put those in kitchen trash.  But the few ones we change upstairs (overnight and first thing in morn) go in here and it works great, no smell, and I really only empty it every 2 weeks.  I am really glad I have it.  Sure I could just bring diapers down in morning and put in kitchen can, but this is really convenient and one less thing to worry about.  I already have to carry baby, empty bottles, and other stuff down in morning so it is nice that I only have to carry this down onces every 2 weeks.

  • We have the munchkin pail as well. It is great for keeping the odor away, and changing the bags is a sinch. They really aren't all too expensive, a 30 pack on amazon was like $14. We change it a lot but thats because we have a 1 month old and a 17 month old so it fills up every few days. Overall I like it a lot better than the genie we had with DS1 upstairs... that one has been trashed and we're probably going to buy another munchkin.

  • Thank you for you input, ladies! I think we're going to go with a regular trash can at first and see how it goes. I'll be bfing so hopefully that will cut down on the smell at least for a while.
  • I have yet to use it but I found a Cosco diaper pail at Kmart for like $13 that takes reg. 8 gal bags. The lid also has a place for a deodorizer and I found those at Sears Arm and Hammer pack of 5 for like $5. I had originally decided on a stainless but for $20 less, I decided to go with this.
