Babies: 6 - 9 Months

If you feed LO in middle of night come in! Questions for you:

We are still giving DD a small 4 oz bottle when she wakes up in the middle of the night. Usually around 2-3 am. So she's been asleep for 7-8 hours at that point. Me, I'd be hungry. She finishes her bottle and then goes right back to sleep. It's been working for us for awhile now but everrrrrrything I read says we are just furthering a bad habit by continuing to feed her in the middle of the night. I don't have the heart to try Ferber right now because she's teething so I don't think that's fair to her either.  A few questions for you....

If you feed LO in the middle of the night:

1.) How old is LO

2.) Are they formula fed or BF'd?

3.) Do they finish all of their bottle/do a full feeding?

4.) Are you thinking of stopping the middle of the night anytime soon? If so, Why? How will you do this?

*Feel free to add anything else!*

Thanks!

Re: If you feed LO in middle of night come in! Questions for you:

  • i wanna add that LO was sleeping thru the night, he doesn't anymore.

1.) How old is LO: 6 months

2.) Are they formula fed or BF'd? BF

3.) Do they finish all of their bottle/do a full feeding? Sometimes. LO doesn't always wake up hungry, sometime he wakes up for other reasons.

4.) Are you thinking of stopping the middle of the night anytime soon? If so, Why? How will you do this? I am not going to stop. I am trying to feed LO more (not more frequently) during the day, and that seems to be helping. I have never slept thru the night, so i am fine with LO waking up.

    1.) How old is LO

    9 months

2.) Are they formula fed or BF'd?

    BF'd

3.) Do they finish all of their bottle/do a full feeding?

I honestly don't know if he does a full feeding or not, to further the bad habit, I bring him into bed and nurse him so I can go back to sleep before I need to get up for work.

4.) Are you thinking of stopping the middle of the night anytime soon? If so, Why? How will you do this?

Nursing is the quickest way to get him back to sleep and me back to sleep so I don't plan on stopping this until he stops waking up in the middle of the night or I stop BFing.  I plan on weaning at a year so I can deal with a few more months of this.

  • Z is 8 months and due to teething is back to waking up twice. He is BF'd and typically would only wake once around 2-3pm. He has what looks like 3 teeth coming in at once.

Dh will always go in first and try to comfort him back to sleep. If he is unsuccessful then I will go in and feed. z will typically take almost a full feeding. I have no plans of letting him CIO or trying Ferber. I believe when he is ready, he will STTN.

If you feed LO in the middle of the night:

1.) How old is LO- Almost 6.5 mo

2.) Are they formula fed or BF'd? Bf'd

3.) Do they finish all of their bottle/do a full feeding? Yes

4.) Are you thinking of stopping the middle of the night anytime soon? If so, Why? How will you do this?  We aren't worrying about it until about 9 mo.  We plan to slowly shorten the length of the nighttime feedings and increase the day time feedings.

*Feel free to add anything else!*  DS wakes up 2-3 times per night so I don't think 1 time is bad.

    Thanks!

1.) How old is LO - Almost 9 mos

2.) Are they formula fed or BF'd? - Formula

3.) Do they finish all of their bottle/do a full feeding? - Most of the time (3 oz)

4.) Are you thinking of stopping the middle of the night anytime soon? If so, Why? How will you do this? - We feed on demand - once, sometimes twice a night. DD has weight gain/feeding issues due to reflux so, if she wants to eat, she eats. She also gets up several times during the night for paci/soothing. I drink a lot of coffee...

  • I just thought I would chime in since DD recently stopped feeding in the middle of the night. DH went in for a few nights in a row and she would settle right down for him without needing food. I BF so if she saw me she would only settle for boob. Now she still wakes up at her usual time but can usually settle herself back to sleep. She goes to bed at 7 and then gets up to eat around 5. Sometimes she'll go back to sleep after that for another hour or two.

  • I am basing these answers on when he only wakes up once.  I am probably jinxing myself but he's been pretty good these past few weeks. I consider waking up once to eat a MIRACLE after him getting up 3, 4 or 5 times from birth until now. He still does have bad nights which I attribute to teething. Also, he still eats pretty often during the day so if he is distracted while nursing, he may get up more often that night.

I wouldn't do sleep training if she's teething. I feel like she should is waking up because she's painful and needs her mommy - so I would definitely go with your instinct on that one! :)

1.) How old is LO: Will be 9 months on the 19th

2.) Are they formula fed or BF'd?BF

3.) Do they finish all of their bottle/do a full feeding?Usually, yes. He goes down around 8 (average) and has woken up at different times (1:40, 3:30, 5:15), but always seems ravenous. He doesn't fall asleep while eating so that's why I'm definitely thinking he is hungry and still needs it. This morning he got up around 5, I nursed him and put him back in the crib. I went back to bed and checked on him (video monitor) and he was already asleep!

4.) Are you thinking of stopping the middle of the night anytime soon? If so, Why? How will you do this? Not anytime soon. He has had 3 nights where he slept all the way through (10+ hours) without nursing at all, so I know he can do it. But like I said, when he does wake up, he really seems hungry. I am hoping once he's getting his nutrition from food (closer to and around a year old), I will be able to better monitor his intake and he hopefully shouldn't need to eat overnight (ha!)

1.) How old is LO 7 mos wednesday

2.) Are they formula fed or BF'd? formula

3.) Do they finish all of their bottle/do a full feeding? was taking almost 8 oz at night until two weeks ago

4.) Are you thinking of stopping the middle of the night anytime soon? If so, Why? How will you do this? When we went in for his 6 month check up doc said he didnt need to eat at night anymore.  For 2 nights I only gave him 4oz then the next 2 nights 2oz then I just didn't give him any food, only his pacifier.  He didnt care at all!!  I was AMAZED and he has gone back to STTN now from about 730 to 630

  • 1.) How old is LO   7 months

2.) Are they formula fed or BF'd?   BF

3.) Do they finish all of their bottle/do a full feeding?   Most or all of a full feeding

4.) Are you thinking of stopping the middle of the night anytime soon? No

I don't feel like DD could go 12ish hours without eating, so I get her up around midnight and feed her and put her back in her crib.  If she wakes up on her own during the night DH is the one to go in to calm her and give her pacifier back if she doesn't have it.

Around 6 months we used Ferberish techniques to get her to go to sleep and stay asleep on her own.  Before that she would wake up 3 or 4 times a night (and sometimes every hour) and nurse to fall back asleep.  I was totally against doing it at first, but we were all miserable from lack of sleep.  It worked well and everyone is much happier now.

  • 1.) How old is LO 6 months

2.) Are they formula fed or BF'd? BFed

3.) Do they finish all of their bottle/do a full feeding? It depends on how awake she is. If she's good and awake she'll do a full feeding. If she's half asleep she'll eat some and then wake up and hour or two later and eat more.

4.) Are you thinking of stopping the middle of the night anytime soon? If so, Why? How will you do this? I have no intention of stopping any time soon. From everything I've ever read it's completely normal for babies to need a meal/snack up until 18-24 months old.
