BH or labour

how can you tell the difference between  the two?

what are the  main tail tell signs

Re: BH or labour

  • BH are more like period cramps, real contractions will be way more painful. Like double you over painful. Real contractions will have you unable to speak and probably holding onto something for dear life. Get the picture?

  • This was just explained to me by the doctor... Kind of like a roller coaster. They start in the back, come around the belly, go down the belly, then up the belly.

Definitely not always the case. My BH switched over to real contractions on Friday and I only noticed a difference because instead of just a "general tightening", I could feel them distinctly start at the top of my uterus and go down and then go into my back.

Pain isn't always a good indicator. I have endo and the cramps I get every month are way worse than the pain I was having with the contractions.

This isn't the case for me.  For me, BH is more of a tightening feeling and real contractions are more like menstral cramps.  My menstral cramps have always been pretty bad, I remember being in the hospital with DS and being in pain, but thinking that my monthly cramps are still worse than this.

So in a nutshell, everyone is different.  doesn't help much does it?

  • For me, and the way I've heard it described by others is that the real deal comes in waves...starts out mild, gets worse and then better again.  They felt very different than the tightness of BH.  But regardless of how everyone describes them, don't worry about being able to tell the diff. You will just know!  If you are questioning it then it's either very early on or BH.
  • My labor contractions were pretty much the worst pain I can possibly describe.  For me, it was like the worst diarrhea cramps you've ever had... times 10,000.  It was excruciating.

    But really, you'll KNOW!

Agreed.  My BH have never been painful for either of my pregnancies, but real labor started out feeling just like period cramps.

  • It may not help (because it could still be 'false' labour) but my MW said if my BH are ever in a pattern, esp if they seem to be increasing, then contact someone as they may be htereal thing.

I got to 4-5cm before my c sect and they were only just getting to be painful. And I still would say my AF cramps were worse. Also mine did not "roll" down the belly like they are supposed to- they said DS was so effing big that they were getting stuck! Also why each ctx was at least 2 min long. So not helpful, right?!

This exactly.  My BH have been intense on occasion, but never painful.  Just a tight squeezing feeling.  When I went into labor with my 1st, it was definitely more like cramps.
