How do you burp a sleepy swaddled baby without waking?

I nurse, swaddle, finish nursing.  I cannot get him to burp once I have him swaddled.  Any ideas?

If I don't swaddle him before the nursing the other side then he gets feisty when I try to swaddle him after being burped and the feeding is done.

Suggestions?  It always bites me in the assz because I lay him down, a couple minutes later he spits up and sometimes wakes.

  • Usually my LO won't burp at the very end of a feeding when she is going to bed.  Normally, if we don't burp her during the day she will spit up.  But not at night for some reason.

  • I swaddle at the beginning of the nighttime feeding. I try putting her over my shoulder and patting very lightly or sitting her on my knee and rubbing her back if she hasn't burped after about 5 minutes I don't worry about it. Oh and I also will burp when she has an oz. left so there is a bit of bottle left to put her back to sleep if needed and if I don't get that last burp...
  • I do the best I can with it and if I'm really concerned (like if LO housed the bottle without burping at all), I'll put him to bed on his side or a little elevated. You can also just try holding LO upright for 10 minutes or so after your burping attempts.

  • I would burp her halfway through the feeding.  Its not perfect but minimizes any potential gas or spit-ups.

This is my DS too. I burp him once during day feedings and right after too, but I don't burp him at night. I tried the first few nights after he was born but soon realized he didn't actually have to burp... for whatever reason. Sometimes they're just fine as they are. I would really only be concerned if your LO was spitting up a lot after falling asleep... then I would try burping before laying your LO down for the night.
