Those that make homemade baby food

I am thinking about making some myself.  Here is what I question though - My DC provider will provide all of Hudson's solids when he starts on them.  She already provides his morning Oatmeal.  So, if she gives him food from the jar and I give him the homemade stuff I am guessing he will be able to tell the difference?  Should I send the homemade stuff to daycare as well or do you think it will be a PITA for DC provider?  I just don't want him to think everything tastes differently - ie - homemade green bean puree vs. Gerber green beans.

Re: Those that make homemade baby food

  • they should be pretty close as far as taste, i dont think he will really notice the difference. if he does then i would start sending homemade.

  • My DS isn't on solids yet but if it were me I would send the homemade stuff.  I don't see how it would be any different really for the DC provider.  Instead of opening a jar they open the container you give them.

  • I've made all DS's purees that he eats at home (he's had squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, and we'll be starting peas tonight). DC provides Gerber foods during the day and he seems to do fine switching between yummy homemade food and Gerber. The only one (so far) that he loved at home and hated at daycare was green beans. HTH!

Awesome!  Thanks!  I was hoping this would be the case, I guess it will be more of a trial and error type of thing.

I took a class at my local hospital about infant nutrition and making your own food. We compared the tastes of the homemade food with Gerber during the class, homemade wins hands down, but since DC provides Gerber for "free" (included in the cost...), why not let him try it?

  • I make DD's food, and when we had to run out of town and didn't have time to pack homemade, we bought Gerber. She was eating carrots at the time, and while she loved the homemade, she made faces for the Gerber. Maybe she's just a little diva and noticed the difference? I don't know. I'd probably still send the homemade, not that much more difficult for DCP!
  • We tried jarred before making a whole batch of homemade.  DS prefers homemade except for Squash... apparently the jarred is better for that LOL

  • I say send the homemade. Its not that much more trouble. My DS has had some of both and hasn't had any problems with either. The only thing that he hasn't liked is the homemade carrots. It ate then just fine but it seened like his little tummy always hurt afterwards. It may just me be though concerned about nitrates.
  • I think there is a HUGE taste  difference between Gerber foods and homemade foods. Get a jar and try it. I would recommend either using a brand that doesn't have any additives (like Plum Organics or Earth's Best) or sending homemade.
  • well she provides it as in pays for it?

It really just depends, Lucy doesn't like the store stuffs consistency (when it is alone) because I make hers fairly thick. But we use some of the fruits in her oatmeal sometimes because the thickness doesn't matter.

I'd say it is fine either way , the taste probably won't be much difference it would just be how you want to make the consistency (which you can make like jarred food).

Maybe if you desire to make it yourself you can get $10 a month off your DC bill or something if she is providing it?

  • My DD does not like the jarred stuff.  There are only a few she will eat if it is all that is offered (carrots, applesauce, and prunes).  I actually taste whatever I give her and could taste a big difference between homemade and store bought (especially sweet potato, green beans, and peas).
