Babies: 0 - 3 Months

36 hours without poop?

My DS is getting 3-4 breast feedings per day. He's eating about 2-3oz  of Similac Advance every 2 hours other than that. He was pooping at every diaper, but now it has been 36 hours since his last poop. It was a TON when he did it. I am expecting a lot of poop any minute, but I'm not sure if I should call the Pedi or not. I wanted to see if you other moms find this normal?

TIA

Re: 36 hours without poop?

  • It is normal for babies to go up to a week with no bowel movement. I'm sure he's fine. But, if you feel like you should call, then call. That's what they're there for : )

  • Sounds normal to me.  At first we had poop in every diaper, but now we get some once every 2-3 days.
  • Even though he's straining and grunting?
  • if he's straining and grunting he could be getting constipated, but babies aren't considered constipated just because they haven't been going every day. They're constipated when they pass little rock-like stools that are hard. (like pebbles)

DD had it quite a bit, and the pedi put her on karo syrup with her bottles, no problems since then! If she has a flare up, we do the rectal stimulation with the thermometer, and that gets things going too.

  • I just posted yesterday about this.  DS had not pooped since Sunday.  He was farting and what not, well last night he finally did poop.  So, like pp, everyone that answered my post said the same thing.  some times 4-6days for a poop is normal.
  • If you're up for it, you could try stimulating his bottom with a q-tip with some vasoline on it.  The nurse at the hospital did this for DD because she was having a lot of gas pain, and it works like a charm.  My pedi also recommended I do it at home for the same reason.  It's helped me (and DD)a lot.

  • ok, thank you. I'll call the pedi if he gets worse. His last BM looked just like dark mustard, color and consistency.
  • Similac makes a lot of babies constipated. I know it really plugged up Tristan when we used it. Formula in general can plug them up. You can always try Enfamil instead, or see if the pedi is OK with you trying a bit of apple or prune juice.

  • That's how Logan's was on Sunday.
  • Go ahead and call because it wouldn't hurt, but it is considered normal for bowel movements to space out around a month old, DD #1 never had this problem (she went from every single diaper to at least every single day) but DD #2 has developed a "poop every 4-6 days" habit. My DH was so worried but I had to keep assuring him that it is normal! Our pedi confirmed that it is fine, as long as the poop is normal when it does finally come. And it is. There is just a LOT of it. lol
