Houston Babies

another BFing question

So up until a few days ago, Eliza was a typical sleepy newborn.  Now, she's staying awake longer and not falling asleep after eating.  Our feedings take between 1 - 1.5 hours and pumping is the last thing I do.  I was trying to feed her every 2 / 2.5 hours, but sometimes, she's awake for that whole time period and isn't hungry when the clock says its time for her to be fed again.  She's not back up to her birth weight, but the pedi told us since she's gaining weight (albeit slowly) that he's not worried about her weight.  Am I okay to let her go closer to 3 or 4 hours between feeds at this age?  She's taking in about 2.0 to 2.5 ounces a session with the supplementing.

Re: another BFing question

  • My pedi said not to go past 4 hours until she got up to her birth weight so I think 3-4 hours would be find for little E. After they get to their birth weight it can be on demand feeding.

  • I would try to keep it to every 2-3 hours during the day.  I think 4 would only be at night.  I like to encourage eating often during the day at that age to avoid day/night confusion.
