Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9+ months and not crawling... it's OK, right?

Ugh - I know the answer to this question, but I am asking anyway.  Sam is just not even interested in crawling. ALL he wants to do is stand.  He pulls up, has great balance, and can even free stand for a second or two.  He can (slowly) cruise from table to ottoman - but if he falls, that's it - he can't navigate back to where he wants to be to pull up.

I try to work with him on it but he HATES it.  We have our pedi appt next week so I will ask then - but what is the deal? Do I work with him on crawling or let him work toward walking, which is what it seems like he really wants to do? I should mention that he eats great, waves, claps, and is even starting to properly say mama and dada - so he's doing great in all other areas.

Oh, and oddly enough - he now sleeps on his tummy so it's not like he just hates being on his belly.

Thanks!

  • Crawling is no longer a developmental milestone, according to my pedi! DS didn't crawl until about 8m, he basically just started doing it one day. And now he mostly crawls just to get to something to pull up on! Sounds like a normal stinker to me Mama!!

  • Normal. Mason didn't attempt crawling until a little into 10 months, and now he is all over the place. It just happened one day. The pedi never showed any concern when I would mention it, and said he might just start walking. Its normal, don't worry. Enjoy being able to sit him in one spot for now.
  • Beanie isn't crawling either.  He's only pulling up on people, but not on inanimate objects.  But he's really big, so I'm assuming that it's because his muscles haven't caught up with his size yet.

  • DS started crawling last week (he will be 1 on Oct. 17th). I had given up hope he would crawl...& then he proved me wrong. :-)

  • DD rolled at 7 months.

    Sat at 10 months.

Crawled at 10.5 months - it was so sudden. She was rolling to get around and suddenly decided to crawl, so she did.

It's fine. Work toward walking if you'd like, some kids skip crawling.

  • It is totally ok!

I thought Hayden was going to skip crawling all together and just start walking because she was doing the same thing you are talking about - pulling up, cruising, etc.

Then, all of a sudden one day, my husband and I were on the floor with her and she just started crawling...out of nowhere.  And hasn't stopped!  This was last week and now it is crazy how mobile she is!

Don't worry, Momma!  All normal and everything will happen when it should!  Plus, as a PP mentioned, some babies skip that ol' crawling thing all together!  My husband did when he was a baby!

  • My DD (my oldest) didn't crawl until she was 10 months.  She also hated being on her belly and she was on the chubby side.  She is perfectly healthy at 5 years old!

  • Nope, we're in the same situation right now.  DS so far has no desire to crawl but loves to stand.
