Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I never knew gagging was normal

Untill recently I never knew gagging was a normal reflex for babies just starting to eat normal food (non purees). My ds isn't on table food yet, but that my be partly my fault. Whenever I've offered him anything of mine, he would gag on it. And I would be afraid he was going to choke, so I wouldn't try again for a long time. Now I know to just keep at it, and eventually the gagging will stop.

Re: I never knew gagging was normal

  • Mason gags himself now with his fingers, but its normal. Infants gag reflex is closer to the middle of their tongue versus ours which is farther into our throats, so they gag a lot sooner and more often.

  • yeah, its just a normal process in learning to swallow! DS gags and sometimes yawns with a full mouth of food. Makes me nervous everytime!
