I have a few questions.
1. How much rice cereal did pedi tell you that LO needed per day to get their iron?
2. If you aren't giving rice cereal, what are you giving them so they get their iron?
3. I think a few of you said you give them iron supplements. Where did you get them?
And also a question not about iron. How long do you continue to give LO the Vitamin D supplement if you are breastfeeding? TIA!
Re: Getting LO Iron if they are BF
Babies stores are in tact until 6-8 mo, at 8 mo they start to decrease.
We didn't do any cereal or supplementation until about 7.5 months.
Now she gets fortified oatmeal every morning and things like quinoa and other foods higher in iron.
My LO hates the rice cereal (and also the oatmeal and whole wheat versions). She will occasionally take some, but more often than not she flat out refuses (even when it is mixed with a fruit that she likes).
Just this past week I was browsing in the baby food section of the grocery store and saw some of the baby food companies make a cereal and fruit mixture. I read the labels and saw that it had a pretty good amount of iron, so we gave them a try. They seem to go over better than the cereal on it's own or that we mix with fruit ourselves.
Also, once/if your LO takes some finger foods, Cheerios actually have a good amount of iron in them as well (puffs have a small amount as well, but Cheerios are much higher).
As far as the Vitamin supplement, I'll just keep giving it to LO until the pedi tells me not to.
At LO's 6mo check up he asked why I wasn't giving him cereal and I told him it was because he was so constipated. He said that he would rather him be constipated and get the iron from the cereal for brain development. He said that since DS is EBF that he needs the iron that cereal supplies. So, we started giving him Oatmeal and mix it with prunes. Daycare gives him his cereal in the morning shortly after dropping him off.
Liam is 5!
