I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes last week. I have my appointment with the GD nutritionist tomorrow. I spoke with her last week, she told me how many carbs to shoot for at each meal/snack, and she sent me a sample menu. I've been doing really well so far, but tonight I REALLY want carbs! Of course, I know I can and need moderate amounts of good carbs, but that's not what I want. Right now, I want apple pie a la mode.
Re: This REALLY sucks! (GD/food related)
How about a baked apple with a little brown sugar/splenda mix, apple pie spice and some low-sugar ice cream?
I made baked apples for dessert tonight because we have a ton of them from apple picking and it only took about 15 minutes in the oven.
It might hit the apple pie a la mode craving and it'll still fall into the acceptable foods for GD.
I'm actually really not sure what is acceptable for dessert yet because my appointment with the nutritionist is tomorrow. So I'm playing it safe right now.
I REALLY don't like the low sugar ice creams, though. I used to try to eat them when I was on Weight Watchers, and they always gave me horrible gas.
The apple thing sounds delicious, but a medium apple usually uses up all my carbs for 1 snack (30g).
I was diagnosed about 5-6 wks ago. I have found that some of my favorite desserts are applesauce, sugar free Jello, Jello mousse temptation thingys (delish!!) and sugar free popsicles.
Also, in time you'll figure out when you can eat certain carbs. I can't really eat bread in the morning, my BS skyrockets. But if I have it for lunch or dinner, I'm usually fine. I'm super bummed about the possibility of still being pg for Thanksgiving...no or very little stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. At least I'll be able to have Christmas cookies!
Thanks everyone! I've been fine this whole past week with just some fruit or yogurt, but I'm an emotional eater, and I've been really emotional the last couple of days about everything. I went for a walk, but I still really want carbs.
I know I'll be fine. I just have to get used to this, but I needed to whine a little.
Yeah, it is rough getting used to the whole swing of things.
I totally agree with the pp about "in time you'll figure out when you can eat certain carbs. I can't really eat bread in the morning, my BS skyrockets." This is me too- and I've also noticed that meat makes my indigestion so much worse.
On the other hand, Peanut Butter is the BOMB lol seriously, I love it, and so does my glucometer.
My main problem is not having much of an appetite, and then having to cook for one person (DH works out of town during the week), does make it difficult.
I fully support your need to whine. Right now I just want an Iced Honey Bunn popped in the microwave dammit!!
It's really, really tough, but you'll get used to it. And know that there is an end in sight!
I was a mess the first few weeks. I cried about it all the time because I didn't know what to eat, even after going to the nutritionist. Your taste buds will get used to having fruit instead of desserts. And just think - your weight won't skyrocket!
I still have days where I really want a cupcake or something, but then I think about the little baby growing inside me, and that's more important than any cupcake!
