This REALLY sucks! (GD/food related)

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes last week.  I have my appointment with the GD nutritionist tomorrow. I spoke with her last week, she told me how many carbs to shoot for at each meal/snack, and she sent me a sample menu.  I've been doing really well so far, but tonight I REALLY want carbs!  Of course, I know I can and need moderate amounts of good carbs, but that's not what I want.  Right now, I want apple pie a la mode.  :(

Re: This REALLY sucks! (GD/food related)

  • How about a baked apple with a little brown sugar/splenda mix, apple pie spice and some low-sugar ice cream?

I made baked apples for dessert tonight because we have a ton of them from apple picking and it only took about 15 minutes in the oven.

It might hit the apple pie a la mode craving and it'll still fall into the acceptable foods for GD.

  • I'm actually really not sure what is acceptable for dessert yet because my appointment with the nutritionist is tomorrow.  So I'm playing it safe right now.

I REALLY don't like the low sugar ice creams, though.  I used to try to eat them when I was on Weight Watchers, and they always gave me horrible gas.

  • Oh, that does suck. :(  No advice (since I was just diagnosed today and still have a LOT to figure out), just commiseration.

  • The apple thing sounds delicious, but a medium apple usually uses up all my carbs for 1 snack (30g).

I was diagnosed about 5-6 wks ago. I have found that some of my favorite desserts are applesauce, sugar free Jello, Jello mousse temptation thingys (delish!!) and sugar free popsicles.

Also, in time you'll figure out when you can eat certain carbs. I can't really eat bread in the morning, my BS skyrockets. But if I have it for lunch or dinner, I'm usually fine.  I'm super bummed about the possibility of still being pg for Thanksgiving...no or very little stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. At least I'll be able to have Christmas cookies!

  • Thanks everyone!  I've been fine this whole past week with just some fruit or yogurt, but I'm an emotional eater, and I've been really emotional the last couple of days about everything.  I went for a walk, but I still really want carbs.  :(

I know I'll be fine.  I just have to get used to this, but I needed to whine a little.

  • I feel ya! I'm struggling. I really want a cupcake. It sucks being pregnant and not able to fulfill cravings.

  • Yeah, it is rough getting used to the whole swing of things.

I totally agree with the pp about "in time you'll figure out when you can eat certain carbs. I can't really eat bread in the morning, my BS skyrockets." This is me too- and I've also noticed that meat makes my indigestion so much worse.

On the other hand, Peanut Butter is the BOMB lol seriously, I love it, and so does my glucometer.

My main problem is not having much of an appetite, and then having to cook for one person (DH works out of town during the week), does make it difficult.

I fully support your need to whine. Right now I just want an Iced Honey Bunn popped in the microwave dammit!!

  • This really has me freaking out...i got for my 3 hour GD test in 2 days, and if i have GD im going to go nuts. I love carbs like its no ones business...and the fact that if I dont have the baby until after Turkey day...omg forget it, im gonna break on thanksgiving, i know it! :(....For the sake of my baby girl in there, I know I can make it through normal days...but not being able to fulfill a craving, or eat potatoes or have ice cream...the thoughts having me cringing already. Good luck to controling and finding a supplement for your normal craves...sounds like ur doing great! I hope i too can only be as strong if it turns out I have GD too...
  • It's really, really tough, but you'll get used to it.  And know that there is an end in sight!

I was a mess the first few weeks.  I cried about it all the time because I didn't know what to eat, even after going to the nutritionist.  Your taste buds will get used to having fruit instead of desserts.  And just think - your weight won't skyrocket!

I still have days where I really want a cupcake or something, but then I think about the little baby growing inside me, and that's more important than any cupcake!

  • It does suck! This is my second time with GD and both times are during all the holidays!!!! Ugh! I've found I can't eat a lot of carbs until about 3pm snack time. Then I can sneak a fun size candy with my snack or dinner and be ok! I hear ya on the apples though- I have an apple tree in my yard and can't make much with them!!

  • Also, girls- my nutritionist said to not worry about ONE day or meal of eating bad- like cake at your shower or Thanksgiving. :) I actually had super low readings after thanksgiving dinner last time! Lol!
