WWYD: Painting baby furniture

We are lucky to have some hand me downs from my brother's family which includes a crib. After putting it together last night, I realized I didn't care much for it. It's a nice crib but needs a little TLC. I was thinking DH could paint it white along with a dresser we picked up to use in the nursery as well. Anyone want to recommend a. how to paint these items and b. what paint is safe? My last question would be - would you paint baby furniture? TIA!

p.s. the only reason I suggested painting it white is so it looks clean and new. :)

Re: WWYD: Painting baby furniture

  • Ashley painted Sophia's dresser and it looked great.  Hopefully she'll see this and can share the details with you.

  • You may want to look into Mythic Paint.
  • Thanks guys! Sounds like I know what we'll be doing this weekend. :)
  • Yep, we painted Soph's dresser and her night stand. All of the furniture in her nursery was either given to us or flea market/CraigsList purchases (we went with a shabby chic look so it worked well).

I wish I could remember what paint we used --- I know it was from Home Depot. I *think* we got one of their low/no VOC paints in the egg shell finish. I would paint ASAP so that if there are any fumes, you can get them all out now.

My only concern would be the crib. Soph didn't do this, but a lot of babies will chew on the top of the crib rails when they're big enough. So, I would just either Google or ask someone at the store to make sure nothing in the paint would hurt the baby - Home Depots paint guy was actually extremely knowledgeable and he totally helped us out.

ETA: Before painting the furniture, we used a liquid sandpaper to help the paint stick. DEFINITELY look into this -- it's way easier than hand sanding everything.

ETA again: This is really old and we don't even live here anymore (haha) BUT here is Soph's furniture after we finished it. We almost painted the crib too (my sister chewed up the tops of the rails) but we never got around to it, so it stayed as is.

  • Thank you so much Ashley for posting your nursery pics. You guys really rocked out her room. LOVE IT. I'll get DH to looking to Liquid Sandpaper - never heard of it. We also hope to start this weekend so it has plenty of time to air out. Funny you would mention the chewing thing - the crib we got was my nephews and the little woodchuck got to the railing a tiny bit - hence why I want to get it painted and covered up. :)
  • Also, keep in mind....you can get crib rail protectors to keep LO from chewing the crib.

Obviously, I have no experience with them, but, I've heard they work very well.

There are fabric ones as well as gummy/rubber ones.
