1st Trimester

Anyone have/had a cyst on their ovary during pregnancy?

I had my first ultrasound and was told I have a larger than normal cyst on one of my ovaries and to take it easy with physical activity so it doesn't erupt.  I have another US scheduled in a few weeks to check the status.  Anyone have one of these?  But on the bright side, I saw my baby for the first time and heard the heartbeat!

Re: Anyone have/had a cyst on their ovary during pregnancy?

  • I did.   Right before I got pregnant(2 weeks before ovulation had a cyst) and then after.  At my first u/s 6 weeks 4 days they found my Corpus Luetum cyst on my ovary. Was having bad pains.  Still do, but I just take tylenol here and there. Sucks, but whatcha gonna do.  They said it should go away by 2nd Tri.

Doc said to take it easy and don't do anything over strenuous.

:)    Glad you got to hear the heartbeat!

  • I have a dermoid cyst on my left ovary, they are having me get monthly scans to monitor it. So far I don't really think its gotten bigger so ?my doc is planning to leave it be until after delivery. Probably will have to have it removed after though.
  • what happens if a cyst ruptures while you're pregnant?  i am very prone to cysts and i didn't even think of this issue until i saw this post.
  • Yep--they found 1 at my 7 week u/s.  Kinda upset they didnt tell me right then and there...didn't find out until my 10 week dr's appt!  Between those weeks I had cramps/pains and slight spotting.  I read this can happen w/ cysts as they disappear so knowing I had one for those 3 weeks would have been good to know.  So I went for a follow up u/s at 12 weeks and the tech told me it's almost non-existant now and not to worry about it.  she told me it's very common and unless it's not growing rapidly it should not affect baby at all.
  • found this answer about cyst ruptures:

The problem with large, even benign, cysts during pregnancy is that they may rupture or torse (twist on themselves). Either of these events leads to significant pain for mom and the potential for miscarriage or preterm labor and delivery for the baby. Large (more than 6-8cm) cysts are usually removed surgically if they do not decrease in size spontaneously over the course of a few weeks. In pregnancy, the best time to operate is in the second trimester, ideally around 14-16 weeks. Occasionally, a cyst may be dealt with via laparoscopy, but very large cysts often require a large, open incision.

A 15 cm cyst is rather big, and the potential for complications like rupture is high. If it has remained for more than two weeks, I suggest you talk to your doctor about your option. Your doctor may have been just watching you for now, until you get out of the first trimester (the first 13 weeks of pregnancy). I have removed several masses this size during pregnancy, and all of my patients went on to deliver normal, healthy babies.

  • Everyone has a cyst on their ovary during pregnancy. It's called a Corpus Luteum Cyst and is responsible for the hormone production necessary to sustain your pregnancy until your placenta takes over that job. In almost all cases, it disappears or significantly shrinks by 2nd tri. I still had mine at my NT scan on Friday---which lets me know why I'm still sick. :)

This is very much like I had read on the dermoid cyst a few weeks ago. ?My doc said since my cyst is decent sized (7-8cm) its probably too big to twist but not large enough that she's worried about rupture. ?Hence the scans to monitor.

  • I had one on each ovary in the beginning. The one on my left ovary was quite large, it has gone down substansially on it's own. My Dr. told me not to worry that even if they burst they will not cause harm to baby.

  • I did right before I got pregnant.  I don't think mine was overly large though because they didn't seem to be concerned about it erupting.  Mine went away on its own in a few months.
