My DS started doing this about a month ago but that's early in my opinion. My DD didn't do it until just over 8 months. However, I think that boys develop their gross motor skills faster than girls.
I think 8-9 months is average and of course, you'll have a lot of variation on that.

DD has been standing holding onto something for a few weeks now (but only if she was put into the position). She started pulling herself up holding onto her crib, a chair, etc about 2 weeks ago. It sounds like that it early though.
Liam started pulling up at 6.5 months. He started crawling at 7 months. He can stand (balance) all by himself without holding anything now but he won't take a step.
Re: When do they usually start standing up alone while holding something?
