DH and I will need to get one. Emma will be 14-15 months old when the new baby arrives and I'd rather not get the one where Emma would be standing behind the newborn.
I want to get one that offers seating for both and doesn't cost over $250.00. BRU had a pic of one in their flyer that was $330.00. Yeah, not exactly the price range we need. DH asked "Are we going to sell the other one to cut cost?" I'd prefer we didn't. We can still use the carseat from our Bertini stroller, carseat set and I can use the single stroller for when Emma is at school and I have the youngest one with me.
My questions to double stroller moms are these:
Did you find after you bought your double stroller that you noticed problems with it? Like was it too difficult to collapse and put in the car?
Did you find it to be user friendly or wish you had gotten another brand? If so, why?
What features do you wish you had on your double stroller that another brand has?
This is a totally new field for me. I am so used to having a single stroller. I'm not crazy about the Bertini one, it's bulky, not easy to put in the car, doesn't have a lock to put over the frame like Graco does and it's sort of a problem to steer with one hand at times. I wanted this one because the colors were so neat. Ugh, not anymore. The Graco one I had for my son years ago was a dream. Easy to put in the car, lightweight, easy to collapse, easy to steer. I need some ideas Mommies...
Re: Any Moms with a double stroller?
I have a Phil & Teds Vibe with the doubles seat. I have a few friends who have the other Phil & Teds (sport or E3 i think) and they love it. They all have kids who are similar to age that your kids will be. You can find them on sale and on Craigs List to reduce cost.
My P&T suits my lifestyle and everything I need in a stroller. I wanted a stroller that my older one can get in and out of by himself and that can be easily used as a single stroller when I'm not out with both of them. I also wanted an easy to travel with since that's mainly how we use it.
I didn't want to buy more than one double. I also have my Maclaren Quest which I use a lot more often. But then my older one walks a lot or is usually in school anyway.
If I were you, I'd definitely consider a Baby Jogger City Micro. You can often find them on sale for $200. They hadn't come out yet when we bought our stroller or that's what I would've gotten. We have the City Mini, which is wonderful and a really easy fold. The Micro doesn't recline all the way though so you can't use it quite from birth. (The Mini does, and has bigger sunshades but I think those are the only differences and yet the Mini costs $400.)
The Graco Duoglider might be worth considering for you, too. Personally I prefer a side by side but tandems have their advantages, too. You can use an infant seat on the Duoglider if you want, and it has great snack trays and storage basket. The fold isn't as quick or convenient as the Baby Jogger strollers but it's really not bad.
I have the Kolcraft Contours from BRU. With a 20% off coupon, it was around $180. I really liked the Graco DuoGlider, but at the time, our "family" vehicle was a Ford Focus, and I couldn't fit the DuoGlider in the truck of the Focus.
The Contours has one awesome feature that I love--the seats detach from the stroller frame and you can turn them in multiple directions. I loved this when we first got it because my youngest was out of his infant car seat at 2 months old, but I still wanted him to face me while he was in the stroller. My toddler wanted to face forward, so it was awesome to be able to adjust the seats--baby faced me, toddler faced forward. Now they both face forward. It also comes with a system to hook an infant carrier into (in the place of one of the seats).
Pros--huge basket below, seats face in any direction you choose, good steering, easy to lift in and out of car once you detach seats, fits in compact cars.
Cons--takes extra time to detach seats from base before folding--no "one touch" fold up like Graco.
Overall, it isn't perfect, but it was awesome when DS2 was facing me as opposed to facing forward. It's cheaper than the Graco and I'd buy it again.
JulieandBen - have you had any problems with the one in the back getting bored or fidgety because of lack of field of view? Also, which one sits in the back?
MSUMama - can you only fold up the stroller if you detach the seats? Or can you fold it up with the seats attached, just it wouldn't fit in your current vehicle in that state?
Obviously, I'm in the same boat as lilbit, so we're looking into double strollers. I've looked into the City Mini, and that and the Contours were the only 2 that really came recommended. Do you ladies know if any big chain stores actually carry these in stores so DH and I could go in and play with them/see how they feel and work??
No. But then I thought about it. There really isn't a difference between the seat in back of the P&T vs. a back seat in a normal tandem. you can't see any more or less in either one. My son loves the back seat of our stroller. He asks to sit there every time I bring the stroller out.
I have a Graco DuoGlider, Maclaren Twin Triumph and a Bob Duallie.
Graco Duoglider is only good for a hand full of months. The best thing about it is that it works with the infant carrier otherwise its long, cumbersome and heavy BUT does have a huge basket for lots of shopping and baby bags. It's relatively cheap also.
Maclaren Twin Triumph. I love this stroller for traveling. Very lights, folds small, is easy to fold and can hold a small infant (not the carrier). It has two small baskets that can be hard to access if the seat is set back for the infant. It fits through all doorways too. Moderate price
Bob Duallie, its huge but sooooo easy to push and run with. It can also be used with an infant and infant carrier with the right attachments. It is the most expensive of my strollers. I had every intent to start running and still have that same intent but i am still on the couch in the couch to 5k program : )
