Babies: 6 - 9 Months

This is CRAP

My BIL and his husband have been foster parents for about a year now, with the same 6 year old boy for most of that time. They've gotten him into all kinds of activities and he's loving it. Now they're adopting him. But apparently gays, and children of gays are not allowed in boy scouts...so before he was allowed in, and now because of who his legal parents are going to be, they are kicking him out. This poor kid has already been unwanted by his parents, now the place he's made the most friends is ditching him too. It's just sick really.

  • WTF?!? That is seriously SO wrong. How can they even be allowed to discriminate like that?
  • Loading the player...
  • What?!

I knew they didn't allow gay troop leaders (which I also don't agree with), but I had no idea they wouldn't even let children of gay couples in! That is SO sick!

Man, that really ticks me off.

Apparently since they're a private organization they can make up whatever rules they want.

  • Awwww...that sucks.  I'd fight the policy.  Could they maybe do a petition of the fathers in their troop?  Surely they wouldn't banish your BIL's son.
  • That is horrible!

  • One of the main reasons I despise the boy scouts.

And we fvcken wonder why our kids are bullying gay youth into killing themselves?  Unreal.

  • How sad for that little boy!  I totally agree, it's crap.  Unfortunately because Boy Scouts is a "private organization" they can choose to let you in or not based on sexual orientation.  What's worst about the whole thing is the boy has made friends already in Boy Scouts.  Though if my child was turned away for the same reasons I don't think I'd want him involved in a group so afraid of homosexuality.

  • Pardon my "language" but are you EFFING KIDDING ME?!  That is absurd! So sad....

Between this and the news lately, I'm asboslutely sick...  It's things like this boy scout thing that cause intollerance to grow.  And in the end, more things like this happen ---> https://redblueamerica.com/blog/2010-09-30/young-man-commits-suicide-after-being-outed-internet-8140

     So sad...

  • This post literally pissed me off.  I don't think asher will be a scout, I'd hate to support an organization that discriminates against children.

    This exactly!

  • While I agree that it is a shame, the Boy Scouts of America are a private organization and have the right to accept or reject whomever they want on whatever grounds.  I don't agree with their decision, but I do agree with their right to make that decision.

Several years ago there was a court case about this and the courts said the same thing.  Several celebrity Boy Scouts withdrew their support of the organization, but BSA maintained their policy.

  • I was a girl scout and was really excited to think Z could be a boy scout. F that now. This is a bunch of crap. Can we write to someone? I will blow up an email, mailing address...etc.

    I'm so pissed about this.

I remember this too.  However, I have to wonder, can the boy scouts or other private orgs keep black people out still if they want?  Legally I mean?

I love their kettle corn.  This year when the kid comes around, I'm tempted to give them a letter stating exactly why I will not be supporting them.

I don't know if I can boycott Samoas. I may have to and send the same letter. We don't get the kettle corn. Our girl scouts dominate the boy scouts.

It is on a state-by-state basis (that is more specific than the federal guidelines), but if it is a "private club," then the short answer is yes.  For example, there is a golf course in our area that does not allow women.  The land is owned by the "private club," fully funded and maintained by them.

  • That's heartbreaking.  I mean, I get that they're private and can make up whatever effed up rules they want.  But to punish an innocent child for something some idiots don't agree with?  That's so messed up.
  • that is really sad. hopefully the boy is too young to realize that he got "kicked out" b/c of that and they can get him into some other activities where people are more accepting.....i would say fight it but then would they really want to stay after making people let them stay? probably not. i think it is very pathetic on the boy scouts part to discriminate like that.

If think that If i were a gay parent, i would stay FAR away from boy scouts in the first place considering their policy on troop leaders :-(

  • This post literally made me sick to my stomach!  I hope your BIL can put a positive spin on this for his son and find a good replacement activity.  GRRRR!!   This makes me so effin angry!

  • I refuse to support the BSA in any form.  I won't even buy a Christmas tree from their lot.

They are super homophobic, and all they are doing is passing on their beliefs to a whole new generation.  I refused to allow my son to participate in the organization, and my father and I got into a huge argument about that fact.  But, once I explained why he understood.

The BSA allows blacks in. The KKK does not....both are organizations and are legal

Um well yeah, the KKK is inherently an anti-blacks organization.  Their whole mission is white christian superiority.  The BSA is not, or isn't supposed to be, an organization based solely on the belief that one group is superior to all others.

I was just answering your question if there was any organization that could keep blacks out legally. I gave you an example. Like the pp said they are a private organization so pretty much they can keep out who they want.

That is horrible.  Wow.. I really cannot believe that.  DD is starting girl scouts next month.  I wonder if they are like that too.  I'm not sure I want to be part of them if it they are.

I am a Girl Scout leader and I can safely say our organization is not like that. We take anyone....we even have financial aid if someone can't afford it!Smile

  • That is absolutely horrible. I don't understand how people can be so hurtful. I would try to find a similar activity that he can join. His family is full of love and tolerance. It sounds like scouts are full of hatred and intolerance. He's too good for them.

Depending on how the kid feels about this I would consider going public. There was something similar with a local outdoors group where I used to live. The little boy made it known that he was hurt because he wasn't allowed to join because he has two mommies. Apparently, the group leader was the one who wouldn't let him join. When the group found out about it almost all of them left and started a new group where the boy was allowed to join.

  • Oh, wow! I am shocked! He is 6... how do you tell a 6 year old they can no longer be in the boyscouts because his legal parents are gay???? I wouldn't want my child to be a part of anything like that... But if your BIL wanted to, I am sure he could talk to the leader and see if they will still allow him in, since it is a private organization.

Thanks for this reminder b/c we bought popcorn from them b/c I knew the parents of the scout (outside our pizza place) but next time I will be prepared to say no that I do not support their policies...I would obviously only say that to the parent and not the kid!

The sucky thing is that DH is totally not an outdoors person so I think we were leaning towards trying it when DS is old enough so that he will experience those things but I will not do it knowing this still happens.

Anyone know the Girl Scout policy?

  • I love buying GS cookies, but when the Boy Scouts were out selling popcorn, I didn't buy any. I don't support the organization because of their anti-gay stance.

I always wonder if I should mention that to the adult who is with the boys selling the popcorn. I haven't, and I'm not going to tell an eight-year-old boy, "Sorry, I'm not buying your popcorn because I don't support the Boy Scouts and their homophobic policies." It's not his fault.

They have the legal right to keep out anyone they please. But I sometimes wonder if I should say something just to let them know that there are people out there who won't support them in any way financially because of their chosen policy on this.
