My city is a NIGHTMARE.

So, I live in rural country. I live in the largest city in our area. The towns surrounding us have been having tons of break ins. "They" break-in in the very late evening/ very early morning while people are asleep and steal whatever they can. They have even been going into the bedrooms of sleeping people and stealing money and wallets out of clothes on the flood. One of my mom's empolyees called her yesterday and said, "they took everything! they even took my kitchen table." He had worked an overnight and I guess they saw he wasn't home and took EVERYTHING. They have been either going into unlocked homes, slitting screens and going through windows, or breaking garage windows and coming in that way.
Anyone have any great advice for keeping burglars away? Keep an outside light on? An inside light on? TV?
On top of this, a lady stopped by the other day with a "neighborhood alert." People have noticed a man hanging around our neighborhood, and he was taking pictures of a 10 year old girl. A neighbor walked out to talk to the girl and the dude drove off.
We live in a VERY nice neighborhood, but there is school in our backyard, so that brings creeps around, apparently. I'm freaked out about all of this. I can't sleep. My husband thinks I'm going insane.

I would look into getting an alarm system if possible. At least it might give you a little peace of mind.
Sleep with the lights on, and/or put a timer on a living room light.
Get a gun.
Get a big, loud dog.
Get a fire/gun proof safe.
Install a motion-sensing light outside your house ... front and back.
Longer term, get an alarm system installed.
I'd be afraid of someone stealing my baby more than my stuff. The biggest reason for the theft of babies is for the black market sale of their organs for transplantation. Seriously.

Ugh, what a mess. My city was dealing with a ton of break-ins a few months back. They finally caught the guys - a couple of 15 and 17 year olds.
We have an alarm system, and seriously I slept so good at night knowing it was armed. If you can afford it, I would totally say go for that, it's probably your safest bet other than keeping everything locked. One of those motion detected floodlights is prob. a good idea too.
Any suggestions on a great alarm system?
I am mostly scared for my baby. I worry because nobody has woken up to see these people... What happens when someone does wake up? Are they armed? E wakes up occasionally in the night and I just worry about what would happen if she woke up and we walked downstairs and startled burglars. I lay in bed, while I should be sleeping and think of all the terrible things. Then I finally fall asleep and I have dreams about these a-holes shooting my husband or myslef. Not sweet.
Get an alarm...adt...brinks...one of those.
If you have an upstairs and downstairs, set the alarm for motion at night when you all go to bed. That way, if someone enters the house, the alarm will go off if motion is detected. My mom lived in a decent area, then someone broke into her house when I was about 10. Now her neighborhood is the pits so she puts on her motion detection before going to bed.
We have broadview security (I think they used to be brinks). The guy came out and was really good at assessing our house and our needs according to the layout of our house. For instance, there is a motion detector right at the top of the stairs, no one is coming near our room or DD's room.
I'm so sorry that you're having such terrible nightmares. You just have to figure out what is going to make you feel more secure. Alarm system? Gun? Do whatever will make you feel better.
