Natural Birth

A book rec for you: A Midwive's Tale

I am reading A Midwive's Tale by L Ulrich.  It is a historical commentary based on the diary of a midwife who practiced from 1785 to 1812. She delivered over 800 babies.  It is amazing how  modern medicine is  a reflection of what happened over 200 years ago.  You definitely wanted a midwife by your side 200 years ago and not a physician.  It is a bit dry, but interesting to page through if you are too busy to read.

  • I just got this in the mail a couple weeks ago!  I've been finishing up the trilogy I was working on and haven't started it yet.  Forget where I heard it recommended, but it sounded interesting.  I've also got Catherine Called Birdy (same author) waiting on my bookshelf.

ETA: Oh wait, I feel silly now!  The book I have is The Midwife's Apprentice, by Karen Cushman.  Not the one you're talking about.  Oops XD  The one you have sounds interesting though, will have to poke around for it.

  • i have that book and really liked it!  i was really interested in how birth was done a long time ago.  i liked the one story where the guy showed up at her house on horseback and had a horse for the mw to ride on to get back to his house when his wife was in labor.
