Must have items for first time mom..?

in 2nd Trimester

Besides the obvious (crib, dresser, stroller) what items are must-haves for a first-time mom?  We want to buy quality items but also don't want to totally blow the bank on unnecessary items.  Any tips?  thanks!

    My favourites:

    Moby (or some kind of wrap/sling/carrier)

    Bouncer

    Swing

    I'm lucking out because both my little sister and twin had babies before me. My twin in the summer, little sis in the winter, so I am gonna be loaded with maternity clothing! Also hand me down cribs, strollers, car seats, glider, baby clothing..you name it.  The one piece of Furniture I really want is a Dresser/Hutch.  (Dresser, changing table and storage all in ONE!)  My husband was thinking of locating a solid wood buffet and hutch on ebay, or the local paper sanding it down and refinishing it, or building our own.  Pottery Barn has a dresser/changing table/hutch that's over 1000, but he found the plans to build it on line.  So that could always be an option!  Also my mother is going to sew all of my fabrics for the room.  Those are always nice/inexpensive ways to have exactly what you want.  I'd say too, getting a one of those things that can be a bassinet/crib, changing area and play pin all in one.  They have them at Babies R Us, and my sisters couldn't have lived without them!

    The miracle blanket for swaddling. And a white noise machine for nighttime and naps.

    Swing...swing, and a swing! 

    Playard

    get a kit that has all of the personal hygeine type things in it (clippers, etc.) and it usually also has medicine dispensers (dropper etc.)

    Thermometer is also important (rectal)

    swaddle blankets (aden and anais make great ones) 

    burp cloths

    diaper bag that is practical (holds enough, keeps bottles cold)

    If you are breastfeeding get stocked up with everything. 

    pacifiers

    baby carrier (love my ergo)

    diapers, wipes, diaper cream (make sure you always have one with zinc oxide in case of diaper rash)

    baby bath

    baby towels and washcloths

    those are some important things off the top of my head

    I am a HUGE fan of our rocker/glider.  So much so, that I want to buy another one so we can leave our current one to use in our toddler's room.

    Things I found super helpful:  sling/bounce chair, exersaucer

    Things I want this time:  baby wrap

    That being said... what I learned with my first baby is that there are some things that they'll love and other things that they'll never have an interest in.  My baby never cared for the swing, so it was just an extra piece of furniture for us.  Unfortunately there's no way of knowing- but if you have an opportunity to borrow some things from a friend for trial periods, that would be nice.

    Bumbo seat; a carrier or sling; sleep gowns jammies with no legs (for bedtimes in the beginning when you're up every stinkin' hour!); CAFFINE

    My DD doesn't care for the normal "necessity" items like a swing or bouncer.

    My list includes: Pacifiers (at least 5, they get lost. lol)  Musical mobile, Pack n play, activity mat, diaper bag, sling carrier, Bath tub, extra towels and wash cloths. I was actually amazed how many towels I go through. I have 4 and it seems like they always need to be washed... never know when she'll pee on the towel while you're drying! Wink

    Swing (this was a life saver when DS got sick and couldn't sleep in his crib and he was so colicy it really helped).

    Moby

    Swaddle blankets (aden and anais and the miracle blanket are my favorites) 

    White noise CD or machine

    Pump

    Miracle Blanket

    Swing (that swings both side to side AND front to back)

    Play Mat

    Crib Soother (we liked the FP Rainforest one that attaches to the crib)
