We are not even close to being able to wean to milk

He is almost 1, and there's no way IMO that it is healthy to switch to milk.  We have his 1 year appt after he turns 1 so we'll bring it up then.

He is such a supremely picky eater and always has been and we have not been able to accomplish getting him on a well rounded diet.  This makes me panic about his nutrients so I think we'll probably have to give him formula a little longer.

  • Our DD is the same as far as picky and getting her to gain.

Dr has told us to go from formula to PediaSure (as a supplement since she will mostly be on all table foods). However it's very expensive. I'm doing a lot of research on alternatives.

Definitely talk to your dr but you can slowly ween to whole milk by mixing the formula in the milk. Lots of different options so you don't have to go cold turkey to milk.

Thanks!  Glad to know I'm not the only one facing this.  Those posts about what kids are eating on this board are crazy.  Jack takes forever to warm up to a food.

  • I'm no expert, but don't they have toddler formula? I'm not really sure how we'll transition. I offered DD whole milk the other night and she absolutely turned her nose. I really thought the transition would be easier, but now I'm sure it won't be!
  • We just began to add 2oz of milk to her formula and it seems as if dd likes regular milk.  This weekend I plan to go half formula, half whole milk.  A month ago, I started to give dd a small bowl of Cherrios with regular milk (enough to wet the cereal) and she never complained then or had any reactions.  I see this as a smooth transition for us.  Also, dd is not a picky eater anyway.

  • One year is just a recommendation, definitely not the rule. Do what you (and your pedi) feel is best for your LO.

I'm not sure if this will help you or not, but my DD had to be on pediasure for a LONG time due to a diagnosis of Failure to Thrive, and she was getting 3 cans a day 7 days a week, and the expense was insane! We said something to the pedi about it, and he was able to write a script for it and we got help paying for it through WIC so that may be something to look into also.. They didn't cover it all but they covered a portion and it helped greatly.
