uterine synechia

Has anyone been told they have a uterine synechia?  I had one detected on my 20-week US, and I'm having a follow-up US tomorrow because my OB wants to see if it's affecting the baby at all, now that he/she has grown.  Previously, the synechia was at the top of my uterus and "away from all fetal parts" according to the US report.

Re: uterine synechia

  • I have multiple uterine synechia (Google Asherman Syndrom) and it's really not something you need to worry about. They are probably just verifying that it's definitely a synechia and not an amniotic band.  If it was "away from all fetal parts" at your last ultrasound, then it is almost certainly a synechia.  The only reason they double-check is that amniotic bands are extremely rare, so most ultrasound techs are not especially experienced in identifying them.  The 2nd ultrasound is likely more for their educational benefit than anything else.  Your case is unique though; most of the time the tech scares the crap out of someone by telling them they have an amniotic band when they actually only have a uterine synechia.  They may also want to verify that the synechia is away from your cervix and not blocking the baby's exit route.  If it was seen at the top of your uterus before, then this is probably not a concern either, since they can't really "migrate".

Thanks, kryssy -- I appreciate your feedback!

  • I was told there was one seen at my NT Scan by the MFM. Then at 15 weeks my OB called it an amniotic band. I was extremly scared because when googling "Amniotic Band" all kinds of scary things pop up. After further discussion with my MFM and OB I am about 90% sure they are simply calling it different things. The MFM told me that she sees Synechiaes all the time and has only had 1 case of the baby's growth being effected. She said normally by the 30 week mark the baby has pretty much pushed it flat. (If that makes sense.) The good news is I was told I would get an u/s every appt! :) So more opportunities to see your LO! Best wishes for a great follow up appt!
