Breastfeeding

Feeding every hour???

DD is only 3 weeks old but has been feeding every single hour to hour and a half.  Granted seh only eats for 5-15 minutes, its still taking a toll on me.  By the time i feed her, then burp her I only have 20 minutes before she wants to eat again!  I feel like I am sooo busy feeding I am not spending any Time with my toddler!

Any ideas on what I can do, if anything?

  • That sounds pretty normal, it should get more spaced out as the weeks go by. Sorry I can't really help much.

  • I'm going through the same thing just posted on it this morning I have like no time because she is eating so often! You're not alone :)

  • I noticed my baby eats more of pumped milk than when BFing alone. I started pumping b/c he was getting too tired too quick to keep going longer than 5-10 min due to his bilirubin level. That was during my hospital stay and the nurses told me the more he eats the faster the bilirubin will be out of his system. We are at home but I still pump a few bottles now and then so in case he is too hungry I can just give him the bottle for a quick fix. He gets really frustrated when he is very hungry and can't get a latch and next thing I know he is too angry to stop crying to feed himself.

  • I'd suggest getting a ring sling and learning to nurse in it - you can nurse in other carriers too but I think a ring sling is easiest to learn.  That would leave you more hands free for your toddler. sleepingbaby.net has good slings starting at $25.

Also remember that newborns are lazy and have to be encouraged to keep eating.  Do you try relatching her after you burp her?  Also try nursing longer on one side so she gets more hindmilk which will keep her full longer.

But it may just be she's doing what newborns do - wanting to hang out on the boob.  She will start to space things out in the next few weeks.  Hang in there!

  • Normal.  Week 3 was so hard for that reason.  It gets better.  Hang in there.
