Babies on the Brain

Need advice re: Oisin's sleeping habits

Let me start off by saying he's an awesome sleeper and, normally, no issues going to sleep.  Not this week.  He is usually asleep by 9/9:30.  This week, not so much.  It's like someone flips a switch in this kid at 9 o'clock and he goes, in D's words, "stone mad".

Hyper is not the word.  It's completely out of control.  Jumping, screaming, crying if you try to put him down.  Dark room, bottle, no bottle, his bed, our bed, squealing, thrashing, laughing, crying, total insanity.

He's not sleeping a lot at daycare. 90 minutes, maybe 2 hours.  The daycare girl even asked me how he was sleeping, because she thought he was going down earlier than normal.  Not the case.  AT ALL.

WTF are we to do with this child?  His eating habits are the same, except he is eating more, but nothing different.  No sweets at night.  We eat around the same time every night.  Last night we ate earlier then normal and it was the same thing.  Is he bored?  Not getting enough exercise?  What???

We can't live like this when D has to get up at 5:30 every morning and I am so exhausted that I have a hard time not snapping at him.  I'm at a loss.  And a 10:30 bedtime for an 18 month old child is not acceptable in my eyes.

  • Have you tried starting bedtime an hour earlier?  I know Luke has a window where he is tired and if you miss it he acts like this and it can take an extra 2 hours to get him to go down...

He could be bored or he could just be over tired.

  • Could it be some kind of wacko growth spurt, since he's eating so much more?  I have no idea, but I sympathize. When G was teething and possibly going througha  growth spurt he would be up for HOURS in the middle of the night - and it was very similar to what you're going through.  It took time and eventually CIO to get through it.

Gavin does have a crazy burst of energy before bed, but it's at like 7:00 and only lasts for about 30 minutes or so.

ETA: I agree with pp - maybe an earlier bedtime is needed.  Gavin has a magic window and if we hit it just right he goes down without a peep.

There's not enough time.  Normally, I get home at 7, we start dinner, eat by 8 and he's asleep at 9.  He gets home with D around 6/6:30 and in that time D gives him a small snack, showers after work and does some dinner prep.

I'm thinking bored may have something to do with it.  Maybe I'll hit up TRU today and see if I can find something challenging for him to play with.

Diana- I was thinking growth spurt, too.  I am packing nearly twice as much food these days and he is barreling through all his snacks and the backup chik'n nuggets we keep at daycare.

  • It sounds to me like he is over tired.  I'd try putting him down an hour earlier.

FWIW, Gabe goes down at 7:30-7:45.  He's up around 6:30 usually and sleeps 2 hours at daycare.  I know not all kids are the same, I'm just giving you a reference since they are close in age.

It's not really feasable, due to timing.  Unless we don't give him dinner.  My kid doesn't miss a meal.

Hmmm, that's tough.  Is there anyway your DCP could get him down for a quickie nap around 4 or 5 to tide him over until bed?

Or could DCP give him his dinner before be leaves so that it's one less thing that needs to be done?

  • If this is happening because he is overtired, my suggestion probably won't work.  But could the daycare give him his nap slightly earlier (not sure if he is in a big center type daycare where this isn't possible.)  Maybe then he will be more tired at bed time and go down easier.

We've tried that.  He had 4 chicken nuggets around 5pm once last week and once this week. Didn't help.  LOL.  Although we didn't try to put him down early either of those nights.  Hmmmmmm.

  • I agree that it sounds like he is missing his window.  The late nap at daycare or dinner at daycare sound like reasonable suggestions given your schedule.  Are either possible?

That's tough because it definitely sounds like an overly tired thing. Timing is definitely hard, we're all home at 6ish, dinner at 6:15 - 6:30, and we start bedtime at 7ish.

Is there anyway that you can prep meals on weekends, so that dinner can be at 7:30 and then bedtime a little after 8?
