How much rice cereal in baby bottle reflux

My doctor said to try some rice cereal in LO's bottle to help with the spitting up/throwing up issue.

She said to try 1/2-1 tsp.  But that is amount is for how much milk in the bottle?  I was trying about 1 tsp for 5 oz (just made a bottle with 1/2 tsp for 5 oz) but I don't want to give him too much cereal if he does not need it.

LO is 3 months and 3 weeks old, weighs 12 pounds 11 oz.

So far I think it is working-now he seems to be burping without the constant spitting up but I don't want to overwork his little tummy.

We are not planning on starting 'solids' until 6 months.

  • I'd to half a tsp for 4 ounces.  Then, if that's not doing the trick, add a bit more with the next bottle.

FYI, I think it helps the whole milk to thicken if you add it about 5 minutes before eating.

I hope it helps, the rice cereal was like a miracle for my DD more than any thing else we tried.

  • We had serious reflux problems and we had to do a lot of cereal.  I started with 1 tsp per oz but ended up at 1 Tbsp per ounce so for a 6 oz bottle he had 6 Tbsp.  I know it seems like a lot and most people will prob say it is but DS did perfectly fine...his reflux is gone now and he now has 8 oz bottles no cereal.  Oh and we used oatmeal because they said rice can be binding.  Also when we started solids at 4 months I never gave him cereal because he got so much in his bottles.  He was also elevated in the crib and on prevacid and all those things helped a lot.  HTH!
  • It really helped the milk stay down for Gwen.  As soon as I would try to lessen the amount of cereal, she would throw it all up.  I would do one tsp. for each ounce or slightly less.
