maccaroni (elbow) or some other large type of pasta cheap and in bulk?

 We nanny share at our house with 18 month old twins and I'd like to bring the sand box inside to the basement for the winter with some type of pasta in it for them to play.

FWIW - I'm not to hot on using rice as it's a carpeted area...

 

any other suggestions?

 I thought lentils maybe?
