Recommend your cups for LO

So, long story short...V never drank from a bottle and we have difficulty drinking out of cups.  She used to drink from a regular cup if I held it for her.  Now she wants to do it herself, so we can't use regular cups.  She never got the hang of sippy cups.  I gave her a Nuk sippy and she chewed the valve and broke the seal on it.  What kind of cup does your LO like to drink from?  TIA.

  • DD does really well with the Playtex Twist-n-Click Straw cups. Have you tried straws?

She tries to blow into the straw.  ;)  We do have one cup with a straw.  I will pull it out for her again.  She likes to chew on the straw when she isn't busy blowing into it.

  • My friend swears by Klean Kanteen for her daughters. The spout is harder and I don't think. It can be chewed through.

That's funny. I mean, not funny that you can't find a cup that works for her, but funny that she's already discovered the fun in blowing into a straw. Wink

    Good luck.

Oh, and have you tried a sippy cup with a harder spout (that can't be chewed through), like these:

DD does well with that style.

  • have you tried removing the valve from a sippy cup, and getting her started that way?  You do have to watch more closely though.

Currently with our DD we are trying a tiny glass, it's insane, but she seems to like it.  we only put a small amount of liquid in it though, and just hope she doesn't try to snatch it.  i know your LO is at an older agee though.  What about like a thermos water bottle?

  • Also we have the Avent sippy cup, and I think it would work if DD was interested in it.
  • The Safe Sippy https://kid-basix.com/ has a hard spout.  We love them.  They have a valve that requires sucking to get the liquid out, but if you remove the valve, she could tilt the cup and drink from the spout.
  • @beccer- Thanks for the link!

@MrsBeckO- I gave her a hard spout sippy this last weekend and she just played with it and tried to bite it.

@Kelly-renee- will try to remove the valve and see how it goes!  DD was drinking from a cup, but tries to hold it herself so I want to give her something that she can safely hold.

  • Is there a reason you don't want her to drink from a regular cup? DS could drink from a regular cup from a pretty early age (I forget now), but our problem was that he likes to throw his cups or make some kind of soup out of them ;) I still offer them to him. I think if you can get her to follow some basic rules, it might work out.

We have Kleen Kanteen, and DS seems to like those (they use the Advent spout). They are heavy though and are cold to hol if you have ice or really cold liquid in them.

As for sippies, DS has liked the Playtex ones the best. Or maybe I like the Playtex ones ;) The spout is a hard silicone (much harder than the Nuk, but not as hard as the plastic ones) and you can remove the valve if you want.

  • Maybe just consistency and lots of practice...
  • Another vote for Playtex.  The twist and lock are great.  We have the hard spout sippies (cannot be bitten through) and the straw cups.  I think DD prefers the straw cups but it's a toss up really.

We do also have some small plastic cups we let her drink out of and someone on here uses a small espresso cut to let her DD drink out of.  All are good options IMO.

  • We like green sprouts.  They are a little pricey but they come with replacement straws.  The straw is a normal size straw as opposed to the fatter ones.

  • Thanks, ladies.  I am looking up green sprouts, kleen kanteens, playtex twist and locks, and safe sippys.  We tried our Nuby sippy and she drank a little from it.  I was able to distract her with going outside and she didn't get a chance to destroy the soft spout.

@Ecobaby- we used to use a regular cup, but DD has been reaching for it lately and dumping most of it all over herself.  When she is in the highchair, it isn't a big deal.  I am afraid that she will slip on our hardwood floor and bop her head.  I hope it is just a phase and either she learns to control the cup a little better or lets me hold it.

We use the klean kanteen and love it.  It's nice because the sippy adapter it uses the avent sippy spouts so we transitioned from a soft spout to a short hard spout to a long sports like spout.  The short hard spouts are what the adapter comes with.   I have an 18oz. bottle in the same color and M loves that I have a sippy just like him :-)

My niece is 2 and likes to dump the cups, but she is able to drink out of them without a problem.  Her parents don't usually let her have them though.  Some people make an only drink while sitting at the table rule.  Maybe you could do that until she outgrows the dumping?
