How many ounces?

I just started back to work last week and have been pumping bottles for my DS I have been making the bottles about 4 oz. but my mom just told me today she thinks that he may need more because he will gobble it down and a little while later seem like he is hungry again. He is 3 months today and a big boy about 15 pounds. Everything I have found says between 3 1/2 to 4 oz. but I just saw on someone elses post that they should be getting 6 oz.

How much are you ladies feeding your little ones? Is it just a trial and error kind of thing? Just test different amonts to see how much makes them happy?

Re: How many ounces?

  • I make 4 oz bottles.  Sometimes she doesn't completely finish it, but sometimes she does.  I tried making them 4.5 & she would rarely finish that so I went back to 4.  I don't want to make them smaller b/c she does finish 1-2 4oz bottles/day.  So basically, yes, it's just trial & error.

  • I give my DD 5 oz bottles, and she's a tad bigger than your LO.  She was still sucking when she'd finish the 4oz ones and my sister (her daycare) said she usually finishes.  It's also caused her to go from 3 to 4 hours between bottles which is nice for us all.
  • Awesome! Thanks ladies. I am going to try 5 and see how it goes.
  • DD gets 2.75 - 4 oz bottles at DC. The smallest one is right before she gets picked up by DH as I get home somewhat close after that.

  • Our LC gave us this formula:

    Weight in lbs X 2.5 = What's needed in 24 hours.
Divide by # of feedings to get the ounce per bottle.

    So. 15 X 2.5 = 37.5
    37.5/8 feedings (just a guess) = 4.69 ounces

  • Definitely trial and error.  I decided to send four 3-oz. bottles to child care each day (12 oz. total, all fresh).  DD is there from 7:45 to 4:15 and only drinks 9oz., so I bring home one bottle every day.  She's also 3 months about about 15 pounds.

  • I think every baby is totally different. Those equations tell me to feed her around 3 to 4 ounces but she drinks 5 ounces. My pediatrician just told me to give her as much as she will take.

As a lot of babies like to suck it's easy to overfeed them from a bottle - DD can comfort nurse at the nipple and not take in very much but that's not possible at the bottle which may cause them to drink more than is needed. Their tummies are still very tiny.

  • How much do you pump at one sitting?  That is typically how much my DD takes in.  Right now she is at 5 oz bottles.  When she was around 3 mo she was getting 4-4.5 oz bottles.

  • Yeah I have seen the calculator and it says about 3.7-4.5 oz. I usually pump about 4-5 oz. Maybe he is just extra hungry today. Thanks for all of your advice!
  • I've been sending 4, 4-oz bottles, and she'd generally only take 3. She's gradually eaten at shorter intervals though, so I'm going to send 4, 5 oz tomorrow. I anticipate she'll only take 3 of them, but who knows. She's there 8:15-5:15ish, probably weighs about 13 lbs, and STTN.

  • I never pump enough in one sitting but I pump enough total throughout the day.  Right now she takes two 5 oz and her last one is a 4, which makes sense since my supply drops throughout the day.
