Statistics of miscarriage after hearing heartbeat

At my ultrasound last week at 5w,4d my RE told me after we hear the heartbeats (we have an ultrasound Thursday to hopefully hear some heartbeats!) that our chance of miscarriage goes down to less then 5%.

To me, that didn't sound right. I told DH after we left that just because he says that, doesn't make us "in the clear". To me, we won't be "in the clear" until I am holding two healthy babies in my arms.

Have you guys heard that statistic before? Do you agree with it? It seems like I know or have seen a lot of ladies who have heard the heartbeat and still suffered a miscarriage so it doesn't seem that accurate to me.

Re: Statistics of miscarriage after hearing heartbeat

  • My RE wouldn't even give me a statistic when I asked.  The statistics are pretty much all over the board, I think.  My RE just said that the risk of miscarriage was very low and not to worry about it (yeah, right).

  • Once you hear the heartbeat with a doppler (not ultrasound) you have over a 90% chance of carrying to term.  You usually hear with a doppler around 10-12 weeks (sometimes earlier on small women).

    This.

At your next u/s you won't actually be hearing the heartbeat - you will be hearing a simulated noise that matches the detected beats per minute.  It is generate by the u/s machine and not your baby's actual hb.

  • I have also read after you see the hb your m/c rate goes down to 5% (from 10% before the u/s) based on being under 30 yrs old.

  • My RE also didn't give us a statistic, but I've heard the 5% from others. I also won't feel 100% until my LO's are in my arms.
