1st Trimester

5 wks, spotting, need some reassurance!

Hi all!

I'm 5 weeks along (acc. to my LMP, but I think possibly my O date was late, meaning I'd be about 4 wks 2 d) and up in the middle of the night thanks to my dear dog. I had my first BFP on Thursday/4 days ago, with subsequent positive tests in the days following. I just went to the bathroom and found brownish/pink spotting. It's only when I wipe, pretty faint and does not look like period blood. This all points to the OK type of blood, right? The only thing is that I am also experiencing some mild cramping in my lower abdominal area, which again is different than period cramps - not at all painful but a little sharper than the pulling/tugging I've been feeling. I know these are also fairly common but since I'm experiencing them at the same time, am a little concerned.

I'm going to call my OB but wanted to see if others have had these symptoms with all OK in the end?

I'm also kicking myself as it was a gorgeous day today and I went and exercised with my dogs - I didn't consider it terribly strenuous but there was some jogging/sprinting involved. Needless to say I'll be taking it easy for another couple of weeks!

  • I have been spotting / bleeding every day for a month now. every time i do something (for me its extreme - i went for a tea with a friend) other than rest I start spotting or even bleeding. sucks, but baby looks good. so the couch is going to be my best friend for a while.

  • I was spotting for a few days.  My doctor says it occurs in 1/3rd of all normal successful pregnancys.  It can happen due to any hormonal change, exercise, intercourse almost anything.  as long as there are no cramps everything should be ok :)
  • I have had everything from light brown spotting to full on bleeding and so far baby is fine.  I am over 10 weeks right now.  Every time I spotted my RE told me to drink lots of water, put my feet up and take it eat.  If you are that early it will be too early for an u/s but maybe your OB can check your beta numbers to make sure they are rising properly which could make you feel better while you wait.  Good luck!

  • I am sorry you are going through this.  I would definitely call your doc and see if maybe he can do betas to see how your numbers look.

  • Call your doctor.  Everyone's pregnancy is different. Your exercising did not cause the bleeding. Good luck!!

  • This sounds like what I am going through. I went to the doctor yesterday for an u/s but they didn't see anything. I am either a lot earlier than I think OR I am having a chemical miscarriage. I had blood drawn yesterday to check my HCG levels and will go back on Thursday to get it checked again. I am still spotting ~ my dr said it could actually be implantation bleeding. It sucks as the doctor said it could be either. I am not a patient person and I hate this waiting game.

You will forever be my best friend. I can almost feel our hugs. I will ensure everyone will know (now and in the future) what a genuine, kind, loving person you were...I already miss your laughter and our daily conversations. I love you, Samantha. May 20, 1983- February 20, 2012
  • RE: Andreas4Dogs - I'm so sorry! Please keep us posted, I hope you are not having a chemical miscarriage. I agree this waiting process sucks, I can't wait to settle into my pregnancy with a little less worry!

FYI, I spoke with my R/N and as I suspected, she said everything I am experiencing is very normal and I shouldn't worry too much. She said the spotting I described (brown and pinkish when I wiped, which hasn't recurred since the middle of the night) is very normal. She said my cramping, which was light, like little spasms, is also experienced by many women and I shouldn't worry as long as it doesn't get more severe or painful. She also noted that there was not much we could do either way at this stage if something more serious was going on, but that it was good that I called her, I shouldn't worry because everything sounds normal, and we will check things out further at my U/S next week (yay!).

  • I'm 5w too, and also have the spotting. I'm glad that you got positive news! GL and enjoy the u/s next week :)
