will you try breastfeeding?

why or why not?

(no judgements in this post please - just discussion).

me - yes.  i guess b/c my mom did?  it seems like a good idea to me to at least attempt it.  i can see myself doing it for a short period of time though.  maybe 3-6 months?  i may go longer, of course, but i have to go back to work at 12 months anyway....

Re: will you try breastfeeding?

  • I bf'd DC1 for 8 months and have every intention to try again.

I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch, though. Breastfeeding is very tough work, and even the best intentioned and most prepared can have a difficult time. So, we'll see how it goes this time around.

  • Yes, It's so good for the baby.  Of course my Mom breast fed all 4 of us kids too.  It makes for healthier babies and helps Mom get back in shape.  Not to mention the cost of formula these days.

  • I'm still BFing DS and plan to BF #2 as well.  I am a little nervous about how BFing a newborn will work with having to entertain a toddler though.

  • LOL at the no judgments part. That doesn't happen on this site, just FYI. There are just a few parenting issues that get heated: natural v. drugs, bf v. ff, and rf v. ff (carseats). It is just how it is.

ETA: I just figured out who this is...you knew all that already. Thankfully this one has yet to devolve.

Anyway, breastfeeding for sure. I can't wait to bf again!

  • Yes. Its free and healthiest for the child. It also is a bonding experience. I've heard from several women that the first few weeks are really really hard. Its painful and discouraging. I think its worth it for my child. I will do it for as long as I possibly can.

  • I am going to try it again this time (hopefully more successfully).  I BF'd for 6 months last time, but had to supplement from 3 weeks on because of supply problems.

  • Yep!  I'll try my best.  It's cheap, convenient and good for the baby.  I'm not sure how long I will... I'll aim for at least 6 months,  but of course that depends on how successful I am at it.

  • I am definitely going to try. I hope I can stick with it for a year, but we'll see. I want to because of all the health benefits.

FYI, Baby Wise is an INCREDIBLE book. I'm reading it right now and recommend it to everyone.

  • yes - because IMO it provides the best nutrients for babe.

  • I really want to!  I am hoping to be an EBF until the baby is a year.  I will have to go back to work, so I am hoping to pump so the baby is getting breastmilk in bottles (I know some people don't consider that EBF, but my opinion is as long as all they're getting is breastmilk, I consider it EBF).  I've always heard and read that breastfeeding can reduce the number of allergies a child has, I don't know if it's true or not, but it can't hurt especially considering the amount of allergies DH has!

  • I really hope to do it for a year.  I just want to learn everything that I can about it because several of my friends have really struggled with it.  Hopefully it will go well for me and my wee one.
  • I will absolutely breastfeed. I study nutrition & I know baby isn't gonna get what s/he needs better from formula than from my body. Plus it'll help me drop baby weight faster. The only question for me is how long...My mother gave me the whole year and I hope to be able to do the same for my baby. Depending on how comfortable it is, I may stop feeding at the teat and just pump after 6 months or so.
  • Yes, I will definitely be trying to breastfeed. I would do it because it's good for the baby and I think it will be an incredible experience.

  • I plan on pumping, but bottle feeding.  I am sure I will also use formula sometimes as well.  I know that my work schedule will be intense at times and I feel this option will work best for my particular situation.  I want my baby to get benefits from breast milk and I am going to try my best to see that I can provide that.  If I got more maternity leave I would probably attempt actual breastfeeding.
  • I definitely plan on trying it.  This is my first so I have no idea what to expect and I've heard it can be quite challenging.  I hope it all works out though.

  • ya i am planning on it.i did it with my boys and they were very, very hard! i ended up just pumping and feeding thru bottle. when i was seen by the lactation consultant she told me i had enough milk to feed twins or triplets! so lets just say i get pretty engorged! breastfeeding for me is a very big production..and usually ends up with mastitis! i actual dread that more then labor but i am going to do it bc it is what is best for baby!

  • I plan of breastfeeding for as long as it seems right for me and the baby.  I know some people who couldn't do it for one reason or another, and some who had no problem.  I am going into it with the best intentions, but plan on not beating myself up if it doesn't work for us.

His three plus my one; we are all excited to welcome a little one!

Babywise doesn't exactly have the breastfeeder in mind. Their methods of putting baby on a schedule can tank a mom's supply in VERY short order. .

  • I'm going to try, but I have a feeling that it'll be much more difficult with twins that it would be with a single baby. I most likely won't be an exclusive breastfeeder, I definitely want DH to be able to help me and I don't want to be pumping all day every day!

  • I plan on trying.  I didn't try with my son and I regret it.  So I hope I can with this baby.

Mainly, because it's healthier, for the bond, and it's free!  I don't really have a plan of how long, except that I would like to be at least be able to do it for the time I take off of work.

  • I am on the fence about it.  I have never planned on bf.  I know about all the health benefits for baby and for me.  I was not bf as a child and I turned out very healthy, so I have nothing against ff.  I don't know why but for me it doesn't come naturally in my mind.  I have no issues with other people bf and encourage it, but I just don't think it will be the right option for me.  I think it will come down to that first feeding to make my decision.  IF, I do bf I don't think I will for more then 6 months and I won't pump at all.  (hate me if you want to, my in-laws do because they know I don't plan on bf)  But at the end of the day it is better to bottle feed and be happy then bf and be resentful.

  • I would really like to!  I did with DD for a year and just pumped while at work.  I am nervous about having to distract a toddler this time around but hopefully it will all work out.

  • Yes, I'm most definitely going to try and I would like to do it for a full year, EBF. There's nothing better than a momma's milk.

  • Yes. I EBF'd DD for 14 mos. Also, I didn't lose weighst from it and I gained 10 lbs when I weaned.

Just my two cents having pumped almost exclusively for 5 months due to issues with b/f'ing. I would recommend at least attempting to bf directly at first b/c you will find yourself pumping ALL THE TIME. I literally had to pump every 1.5-2 hours (even at night) to keep up with a newborn's feeding schedule and keep my supply going. It's just that you don't get that much from the pump each time there at the beginning and so you have to "build up" supply and then pump again. I could almost NEVER get out in front of the baby in supply until like the 2 month point. I think I got a day ahead of her once, and then gave it all back b/c I failed to get up and pump in the middle of the night. AND I ended up with mastitis (a total nightmare).

Oh - and if you're going to do the pumping thing for a while - I absolutely recommend going for a really NICE pump. Don't skimp - get a GOOD ONE.

    Ok, I'll shut up now.

Even if you keep a stock of pumped milk? I want to use bottles too sometimes so that DH and other family memebrs can feed the baby too sometimes.

I *loosely* followed Babywise/Baby Whisperer with my DC and I didn't have supply issues. I love ya' Patty, but Babywise still encourages feeding on demand and listening to baby's cues.  Smile

To the poster, a stock of pumped milk is going to come after you establish your supply. Don't bet on being able to have a stock ready for quite awhile after you get going.

There is a sort of myth out there that Babywise puts baby on a very strict schedule. Earlier versions of the book were a bit different than the current issue. Anyway, Babywise isn't a popular concept on TB.  Just a warning.

  • I definitely plan on breastfeeding.  Of course, that's if everything (supply, baby, etc) works out.

Why?  Because breastfed babies enjoy many health benefits.  Moms who bf also have lower risk for breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer.  It's a bonding experience.  It can help me lose weight quicker.  It's a heck of a lot cheaper.

  • I plan on breastfeeding.

Why? Because of the many health benefits, the bonding experience, and it is way cheaper.

  • I am going to try bf, but if the baby is like me, it will end up on soy formula. My mom tried to bf me, but I could not keep any milk down. If bfing is successful, I am going to pump once I return to work and aim for 6 months of bfing.
    DD1: May 2011
    DD2: February 2014

  • I honestly do not plan to BF. I wasn't able to BF DD due to significant health issues after delivery, and I came to love formula. Also, I am having twins and I don't think it is worth it to stress myself out over bfing two.

(btw, DD was FF from day 1, and I lost all 70+lbs of my baby weight in under 2 months)

  • I plan to BF my second, and I'm still BFing my first. I have to admit that I almost lost my mind the first time around so if it doesn't work out this time then I won't beat myself up about it. BFing a newborn was not easy for me.

Thanks for your input.  It's my first time around, so these are good things to know!

  • Most likely not.

I am totally in the minority here and I am cool with it.    I tried with my DD and I was dry as a whistle!    I did not make NOTHING!!!    So, I am not going to give myself that heart breaking experience again.   I cried for weeks after I foudn out that I had nothing to offer.   I really wanted to BF with DD.   So, on baby #2 we are going to accept the facts now and onward we go!
