So I'm starting my research on solids. We've decided to start at 4 months instead of 6 b/c I'm running a few oz's short of BM each day already. I'd rather start solids than have to supplement more as her needs increase.
What brand do you use (Beech-Nut, Gerber, Earth's Best etc)? If you make your own, I'd love recipes!! Thanks mamas!
Re: What solids do you use? (Brand, not food type)
For rice cereal and oatmeal, I've been using Happy Bellies. It's organic and fortified with DHA and probiotics. DD took to both of these very well, though she likes oatmeal better than rice cereal. For veggies and fruits, I will be making my own. We're starting green beans on Sunday. I got a Beaba Babycook as a gift and will be using that to steam and mash it up.

We just started solids on 20 Sept

I pretty much make everything but have bought a couple of jars of Earth's Best.
Making your own is really a lot easier than I expected and I like knowing exactly what's in there. I've made carrots and squash (peel, steam them on the stove until soft, blend until smooth - make sure to add water for the right consistency, freeze in ice cube trays, transfer to plastic freezer bags).
There is a great website, wholesomebabyfood.com They have a bunch of great information if you're interested in making you own. GL!

I also make sweet potatoes (roast in the oven for about an hour, put them in the food processor and repeat above directions), apples and pears.

Will definitely let you know how it goes! If you already have a steamer and a blender or food processor, those would work as well. I have read around here that people also use something called a "Magic Bullet". I probably would've used my existing kitchen stuff if someone didn't give me the Beaba. GL! The wholesomebabyfood.com website is a fantastic resource.
So far, I've made everything except for her cereal (I use the Gerber rice and oatmeal). There're really no recipes involved. I will recommend 'equipment' though. Get a steamer basket and silicone ice cube trays (links open in new windows). The basket helps retain the nutrients while steaming and the silicone trays make it easier to pop the food out once it's frozen.
Use the water from the pot in your food processor to add liquid. For squash, which I roast (cut in half, scoop the seeds and cook at 400 degrees, facedown on a cookie sheet, for about 40 minutes), use bottled or filtered water or formula/BM. I don't cook bananas, so I thinned those with some formula (a few tablespoons was all I needed for about 4 bananas). Instead of dealing with making your own pumpkin, use the Libby's canned.
Remember that each ice cube is 1 ounce of food. (2 T. per ounce when filling the trays.) www.wholesomebabyfood.com also has some great tips!Good luck!

My last post here turned into a novel, so I'm splitting this up. I happened to think of this recipe that I made (for us) the other day. It turned out to be a great baby food for DD too... She loved it! (Just make sure your LO has already had each of the ingredients separately first.)
Pumpkin Spiced Applesauce
12 oz. pumpkin (1 1/2 cups), 9 - 10 apples (assorted types), 1 cup water, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
Peel, core and chunk apples. Add all ingredients to a large pot and bring to boil (covered) over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and let simmer until the apples start to break down and it gets really juicy (about 20 minutes). Remove the lid and continue to simmer for another 20 - 30 minutes (or until the majority of the liquid evaporates). Puree in a food processor to get a smooth consistency. Enjoy!

I'm planning on making my own. This is one of my favorite food blogs and she has some great baby food posts...

With DS, I used Earth's Best or Gerber Organic.
FYI, at this point, solids shouldn't be replacing BM or formula in baby's diet. If she needs more BM/Formula, that should take precedence. Solids at this point are basically only for practice.
