1st Trimester

Is walking 5K ok if you're told to "take it easy?"

My Dr. told me to take it easy, no sex no heavy lifty etc. until I stop spotting.  I haven't stopped spotting yet and I have the CIBC run for the Cure coming up on Sunday.  I am going to call my dr. before the "race" (I'll be walking not running) and ask but I can't call while I'm at work as EVERYONE can hear when I'm on the phone.  I just thought I'd get the general consensus from you girls now so I have an idea of if I might be able to participate or not.

Re: Is walking 5K ok if you're told to "take it easy?"

  • lurking from 6-9 --I definitely wouldn't be doing it.  That's still classified as strenous excerise in my book --5k walking is still a lot on your body--I woudln't do it if i were you.  Is it really worth the risk?  Think about it.

  • I wouldn't do it. Take it easy to me means doing what you have to do to get through the day and resting as much as possible.
  • I'm going to say, No.  Not unless you are a very active person and walk at least 3 miles at once a couple times a week....  Good cause, but not if your supposed to take it easy..

  • If it were me and I were spotting, I'd be skipping the walk and putting my feet up. Just wouldn't be worth the risk or the worry for me. But your doctor may feel differently, so I'd take their advice! Do you have a cell phone that you could step out of work with briefly to make a call?

  • He probably said no exercise as well because that's what mine said. No sex, no lifting, no exercise.

I can't believe you are considering walking 5k.

  • I would say no unless you've been training for a while and your body is really used to that being part of your routine.

I think if you're questioning it I would sit it out. For me something like that isn't really worth the risk.

  • If you are normally a half or full marathoner, then I'd say walking a 5k qualifies as easy.

If you are a "weekend warrior" just doing some runs a couple times a week, then I would probably sit it out.  Most people fall into this category.

Calling your doctor is the best bet, though.  GL and congrats!

  • Hey Ladies, Thanks!  I was leaning towards no, still going to check with the dr. but it's the first year I signed up to do the "run" and I raised a bunch of money for it too and kinda felt obligated to participate.  Thanks for giving me a resounding NO... makes me feel better sitting it out knowing I'm not the only one who would.
  • Seriously?  Seriously?

There is no definition of "taking it easy" that involves 5k of anything.

I don't know why you would even consider risking your PG (and baby) over a 5k walk.

thats a big fat NO vote from me.  honestly - if it were me - i wouldn't even call my doctor because i wouldn't even consider doing it - regardless of what he/she said.

LOL No, it's not  MUD... I signed up to do the run before I found out I was pregnant.  I was never told to "take it easy" in my first pregnancy and I wasn't sure whether walking was too strenuous.  I regularily exercise so I honestly wasn't sure.

     Thanks for the answers ladies.

  • I think that's a totally fair question if you are someone who exercises regularly and often runs. That said, I am experiencing some spotting too, doc said it's normal and probably fine, but I'm "taking it easy" and skipping my workouts this week until things calm down. It's a great cause so I understand why you are reluctant to skip it. Good luck!

  • I say don't do it...  I probably wouldn't but I only because I was spotting.  I am a runner, I run 4-6 times per week and so a 5k walk is taking it easy...

to those that are judging...  you must not be regular exercisers.

  • In a normal pregnancy, sure, but if your doc has restricted your activity, I'd say no way. Too strenuous.

The doctor says no exercise and you think its still ok? Really? Is the health of the baby not more important? I don't care if you are a runner. If you are spotting and the doctor says to take it easy meaning rest up and relax and don't do ANYTHING that can harm the baby then I'm going to stick with what the doctor says. NOTHING is more important than the health of my unborn child. I would sacrifice an arm and a leg if it would keep my baby safe. You are selfish.

  • My advice:

Look up all of the things that the 3rd trimester people are trying to induce labor and avoid them.

    -No long walks

    -No sex

-No cleaning the floor on your hands and knees

-Avoid spicy food (gives you the runs and may induce uterine contractions)

    -No nipple stimulation

I tried all of these with my last pregnancy and none worked to get the baby out; however, they DID definitely cause some contractions. If you're spotting, I'd be as careful as possible. Take the opportunity to kick your feet up and relax until further instructions from your doctor. If you don't listen now, you may face months of bed rest :(
