What is the point of shelf paper??!!

My mil has it in every possible flat cabinet surface in her house including all the drawers. I just don't understand the purpose. It's always dirty looking, far dirtier and stained than it would be if it was just the cabinet surface, and since it's older it's all bubbly everywhere. I just think it looks gross and dirty. I've never seen shelf paper that looked otherwise.

Am I missing something?

  • To piss people off.

And I was wondering how far along Luvlie was the other day. Thanks for the ticker. ;)

  • I wonder the same thing.  MIL mentioned a few months back she insisted BIL put shelf paper in his new apartment.  MIL is a pretty laid back, carefree person so I was intrigued by why she thought it was so important, yet too afraid to ask!

  • it's supposed to make it easier to keep your cabinets clean b/c it's supposed to be water proof, so when you wipe with a sponge it wouldn't potentially warp your cabinets.  but it's still ugly.
  • It must have been the precursor to those disposable hand towels - a perfect way to waste money and kill trees!

  • I have used it when we have lived in older places that had icky cabinets. We rented an older house once that had nasty cabinets. I tried to scrub them clean, but I just couldn't get the crap off. So, I put shelf paper in and it was like having my own clean, new surface.

This for me too.  I haved lived in several very old, poorly maintaned apts and always scraped off the nasty old paper and laid down clean new paper.  In my house with nice new cabinets, no paper.

Ditto, and I am a bit freaked over other peoples ickies left in a rental kitchen. So before any unpacking happens I scrub and line all the cupboards, then scrub again. I think this means I have issues.
