DD is 7 mo, and just "got" eating 9 days ago - she's finally interested and will happily eat stuff if we offer it. She really likes to BF, and so far is bfing as much as ever. I know she'll start to bf less and eat more, but I'm not sure when or how this should go. By 12 mo, I would like to be down to just 2-3 bfing sessions a day (we're at 6-7 now); how and when does this happen?
This is my second child, but she's very different from #1 - she won't take a bottle or paci, and really loves nursing. DS would eat anything at any time from anyone and happily took whatever we offered so there was never any issue with weaning and since it was almost 5 years ago, I've forgotten the details.
Any BTDT experience? Thanks!
Re: talk to me about weaning...
My DD cut down to 2-3 nursing sessions pretty much on her own. Some days it will still be more like 4, but mostly 2-3x per day now. Right around 1 she picked it up a bit and I was worried, but then she dropped off again. If we're out all day and I make a real effort I could *probably* get her to drop them all together but I don't care that much
I like nursing her.
Honestly 7 months is still SUCH a baby, I wouldn't worry about it at all. She should still be taking in mostly BM at this age, I don't even think solids are supposed to "replace" a nursing session at this point- you might be able to drop a night nursing session if she is still nursing at night, but I wouldn't mess with daytime nursing.
My LO was about 10 months old when he decided to stop nursing/taking bottles during the day. A few weeks before that, he became extremely distracted during both breast and bottle-feeding, playing with the nipple, stopping to babble, laugh, pull my hair, etc. He still took a bottle of EBM at bedtime (I would have preferred to nurse him, but he had a different idea!), and nursed twice during the night until close to a year.
HTH!
