XP: OMG I broke my tooth

I knew pregnancy did a number on my teeth, but I never anticipated breaking one of my teeth.  Thankfully it's one of the back teeth, not the front, which I'm grateful for, but OMG this freakin hurts!!!!!!

Any suggestions to help get me through the weekend???

Re: XP: OMG I broke my tooth

  • If you are a patient of record at a dentist's office, I would call them tomorrow.  That way you can be seen on Monday for an emergency visit.  Motrin (ibuprofen) tends to be better for dental pain than Tylenol due to anti-inflammatory properties of the drug.  I would avoid eating on that side of your mouth until you can be seen.

Hopefully, you just broke a cusp off of a tooth.  If it is hurting, then it could be from exposed dentin.  If you broke more of the tooth, then you could have an exposed nerve or a crack down to the nerve (this is generally more painful).  I would also avoid very hot or very cold drinks.  You might feel some relief from Orajel. I hope that you feel better soon!

  • I haven't been to a dentist in years so no records anywhere.  And I had Hubs take a look, he says it's pretty bad.  Orajel isn't working and I'm praying my codine kicks in...

    Gosh this sucks.

  • The codeine should help you get some sleep.  I would definitely try ibuprofen in the morning.  We have lots of dentists in San Antonio, so getting an appointment on Monday won't be too hard.  Is it a wisdom tooth that is broken or just a molar?

  • It's a molar, (had all my wisdom teeth removed when I was 12) like the 2nd one from the back.  Do you know if there are any emergency dental clinics on your side of town, I don't think there's one on my side.

  • There is a place off Walzem that is open on Saturdays and Sundays.  It is called Emergency Dental, Inc.  I found it online.

  • Hey :)  I've been lurking on this board to get some parenting ideas....but anyway...

My DH is a dentist and I work for an oral surgeon...My advice to you would be to get a recommendation for a good dentist from someone you trust.  Most dentists have an emergency number on their answering machine and usually this would qualify for a dentist to come in on the weekend, or they could call you in an antibiotic and pain med.  I would just hate it if you went to an "emergency dental clinic" and saw a dentist who was sub-par, who did a quick fix.  A lot of clinics have high turnover of dentists and new grads who are looking for experience prior to opening their own practice.  While that is a great setting for the dentist, I wouldn't want to be the patient.  I do recommend the ibuprofen instead of Tylenol...better yet, do Aleve.  It is an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen, but lasts longer.  Also, if you don't necessarily want to take the codeine, mixing Aleve and Extra Strength Tylenol together is a really good option also.  Sometimes Walgreens carries a little kit with some temporary cement that you could put on the broken part and that may help with some of the sensitivity, but I would get it looked at asap...probably will be a root canal.

    Just my two cents...

I'll go back to lurking :)

  • that happened to my. Motrin works to take pain away, and its ok from BFing. Ambosol in the tooth and around the gum line will work till the motrin kicks in.
