diaper changing drama

My LO is 8mo and STILL cries when I change his diaper! I keep waiting for him to grow out of it, but okay, 8 months?? This can't be normal. And changing clothes is a total meltdown every time. I've tried giving him toys to hold, but he will not have it. What is his issue? anybody else go thru this?

Re: diaper changing drama

  • I hate to tell you, but DD still has diaper changing drama.  I think she just doesn't want to sit still for the two seconds it takes to change her.

  • Our DD does the same thing!  Not every single time, but more often than not.  Two things have helped us...first, we keep a toy near the changing station that she only gets when she's having a diaper change (it's a little stuffed lamb that our doula gave us after she was born)...that has helped tremendously and not she'll just "complain" until she gets the lamb.  Too funny, she'll even turn over "looking" for it.  Since toys haven't helped your LO, what about a mobile or other hanging "art" over the changing station that'll grab his attention?  Or perhaps, trying to change him standing up (if he's able to balance upright) rather than lying down, especially if it's just a wet diaper and not poop.

Second, for clothes changes, I have found that if I make a game out of it, she tolerates getting dressed and undressed.  So I'll count..."one, two, three...where's Libby?" as I pull the things over her head and they say, "there you are!" She usually giggles now instead of fusses.  And she prefers to be sitting in my lap or standing now rather than lying down to change clothes.  With sleeves it goes much better if I actually ask her to "help" and put my fingers through the openings on the outside and grab for her fingers and guide them through (rather than have my hand under the shirt and trying to guide her hand through from the inside).

  • My DS screams bloody murder every diaper change. He fights me, rolls away from me, tries to crawl off the changing pad, and sticks his hands in the diaper while I'm trying to clean him up. He's coming up on a year, and it's been getting worse the last 2 weeks.
